I have a 95 Volvo Penta 5.8L Cobra SX with new alternator and all new v belts. When starting the engine and during acceleration in neutral I hear a loud squeal. I tried belt conditioner just in case, but no change. I used a stethoscope on the Alt., PS, Water Pump, seawater pump, they don't sem tttto be the source. The squeal is coming from the rear somewhere. Anyone have any advice how to correct this? PS. new gimbal bearing and greased.

Thank you, Ok, will do. But have you ever heard of a squeal from the rear of the engine like its coming from the coupling area? It definately sounds just like v-belt squeal. The engine is a fresh reman from ATK, only 3 hours on it for break in / ring seat. Thanks again, I love this forum!

At this point the only thing to do is to pull the drive and inspect the gimbal bearing. How does the oil look in the drive?

Agreed the gimble bearing might be dry, you can try greasing it with the engine running before pulling the drive

Thank You KN, Its still in the slip, I was debating what to do next before pulling the boat out of the water. But once its out that is what I'll do after I try what Lou C recommended.

Thank you Lou C, I will have to take it out of the water (still in the slip) , it has a wide swim platform and I can't get to the grease fitting without getting in the water. I'll have to drive it a half hour to the town ramp and take it out of the water.

Ayuh,..... Most times, where ever the latest work was done, is the 1st place to look for a problem that just cropped up,...
