The driveshaft and all of the gears are in constant motion. The clutch dog engages or disengages the propeller shaft at your command. A highly pitched noise is often a bearing that is going bad, but could also be caused by something like a loose flywheel that was not properly re-torqued.

I would start with the flywheel, it is the easiest and you don't have to remove the boat from the water most times. Start there and report your finding and we will go from there.

That's scary. I always figured if I wanted something, don't use it (or take it loose) over the water.

Re: Squealing/Screeching sound after running a while?

Just an update...

I haven't had the chance to get out and check to see if I could pinpoint where the sound is coming from until last night. I went out last night and to my surprise, the sound was gone. I was only out for about 30 minutes, just trying out my new prop, but the last time I heard the sound after going WOT for only 2 minutes. Therefore now I am really confused, but until the sound returns I would have no where to start looking. Hopefully it was just something related to my old prop which is the only change since the sound before. Thanks to everyone for their help, if the sound returns I will trace it down a little better and ask for some more help.
