hey all...i have a 2005 115hp 4 stroke merc that up untill now has been trouble free..recently there has been a whining as if there was a slipping fan belt..after taking off the timimg belt cover i noticed that the belt seems to be slipping down the pulleys on the can shafts, the belt then squeals up against the block...i can push the belt up but eventually it comes back down again..any ideas there are about 130hrs on the engine..i have a service manual and it looks as if everything is where it belongs..thanks

Re: squealing timing belt

Hi,

I know nothing about the 4 strokes.
However from looking at a parts diagram it seems to me that if all the pulleys are tight then the belt may be headed towards failure. I have a hard time believing that a cam shaft bearing is wearing out creating a slight cant in one pulley. The belt could then walk down. This is pure speculation. I hope someone else has some experience with them.

Re: squealing timing belt

thanks for the input corm..so far.....the belt looks good..the engine is a 05 that i got as a 06, there is no fraying or cracking that i can see..although i was thinking of replacing it just to make myself feel better...plus if its a "interference" engine..i'll be screwed if it does fail while running..i was hoping someone else had this problem.
