Started my engine up the other night and heard what seemed to be a light squeeling noise comming from the engine. It wasnt constant. The thing is...everytime I heard the noise there would be a hiccup in the pee stream from the water pump. Im assuming the pump needs to be replaced??

No real idea, since I'm not at all familiar with that engine (by about 40 years) but I wonder if it's possible the impeller was replaced previously and the key was forgotten? Or maybe there's a brass insert that's broken loose from the rubber impeller body?

Sounds to me like something is spinning/slipping that's not supposed to... .

If it was me, I'd be pulling the lower unit.

Upon further reflection...

Were you running on a hose, in a barrel or on the lake? If you were on a hose and the flow couldn't keep up with the pump, it might have been squealing while sucking air out of the hose. Under those conditions probably still a good idea to check the impeller.

If the unusual noise is in sync with the interuption of the pee stream, as you described, you should replace the water pump as previously suggested. This is a good thing to do anyways if the pump/impeller has not been replaced in the past few years. If the unusual noise continues after replacing the water pump, there are other possibilities but the first thing to check/fix is the water pump. This is my opinion anyway.

Re: Squeel and Water Stream Slowing??

Changed the water pump and thermostat today. The pump in there was close to brand new, not too much wear on there. LOTS of sand in there though! I ran aground the other day and I guess I picked up alot of sand. I washed all the sand out and changed the pump anyway since I had everything. I could not recreate the squeel after this. Ill be taking the boat out tomorrow to verify.

My dad got zapped by one of the spark plug cables while working on the engine, he said that that cable needs to be changed. Would that problem cause the engine to break up and run rough, cuz thats the next issue I need to tackle?.
