I'm guessing that the motor is a '71-'72 125 or a '72 100hp.
Check the wiring on what you are calling the "clipper" switch to see if it has 2 yellow wires , red, a purple one and a ground. If so, that is a safety switch to keep the motor from starting up if a piston is near TEC and the key is turned on.
The motor has to be cranking over and the alternator juice turns the safety switch on to allow the red wire 12 volts to travel to the purple wire which in turn is connected to the powerpack, sort of like a relay.
The "dog nuts" are twin diodes that rectify the AC current from the alternator to provide voltage to the green wire (neutral) in the gearcase to keep the shifter from banging into gear when you shut the motor off since that is mechanically spring loaded into fwd. gear when there is no hydraulic pressure.
