For the last year I have been trying to help save and Icon of American History, the SS United States. I've been trying to raise awareness on this ship, "kinda hard being in HS" So I decided I would try it out on here. The SS United States, was and still is the fastest liner in the World holding a record for over 50yrs. Her current owner recently put her up for sale, and could be in danger of being scrapped. I know this probably belongs under another topic, but she needs to be restored, like so many other great liners so. Included is a link to my small website if your interested in saving the national flagship, also just a quick goolge search brings up thousands so whatever. Please Don't bash me for posting this, I figured she is a important part in maritme history, and needs to be saved, "restored"

For less than $100 and a week of work, you too can be the proud owner of a luxury cruise liner (1/148326 owner :D)

148326 Iboats members x $10 = $1.5 million (well not quite, but we can haggle on the purchase price)

148326 Iboats members x $67 = $10 million restoration budget

148326 iboats members x 40 hours = 6 million man hours

148326 Iboat members x $22 = $3 million for beer, gas and munchies

Sounds tempting, doesn't it

Re: SS United States National Flagship in Danger

My family (mother and siblings) did a 5 day transatlantic crossing on the SS United States between South Hampton to New York harbor back in '69 when my dad transferred from London to Treasure Island Naval Air Station in the San Franscisco bay. I remember that cruise very well and somewhere even have an original brochure of the SS United States.

Not sure why we took a ship back considering we flew over to Brindisi, Italy (the previous assignment) 4 years earlier on a Pan AM 707 (anyone remember those?;)). Maybe it was less expensive or it could have been we had to kill time before my father could join us in New York. Anyway, it was a memorable experience.

I think you would stand a better chance if it was a military craft and finding someone with the 20-30 million extra dollars to buy and restore an old cruise ship will be a huge obstacle.

Have you contacted a maritime museum, if anyone would want it and have the resorces to restore it it would be someone like that.

Fisherdan, how do you work out the time share on that deal and if I get in I want to drive it.
