Angus63-Yes I hope she does find a home. I knew NCL wouldn't turn her back into a liner. I knew that when they sold the last liner built in the us for scrap the ss independence. I am hoping that instead of being scrapped, she is at least turned into a hotel, like the Queen mary. Have you ever seen the docummentary ss united states a lady in waiting? It awesome how fast she is so fast the paint on her forward hall ws blasted off. Ill look for a picture of that. Its in by youtube video on page 1.

I thought i heard that they were not going to scrap this ship. I thought their plan was to remove all the hazardous materials and anything usable and then drag her to sea and sink her as a reef or something. I dont remember where i saw that but thats what i remember seeing. When i saw that there was people that were opposed to it for the reasons you guys are talking about.

I honestly never heard of sinking her however Id rather have her sunk then scrapped. All the hazerdous materials were removed in the early 90's. She was actually going to be converted into a cruise ship by ncl, but they lied. She will not be sold for scrap, but could be bought by someone that will.

Yes, it will be a shame to see her go no matter how the deed is done. Unfortunately, and I hate to be the one in this thread to say it, I don't believe she ranks in the same class as the Queen Mary in terms of refurbishing into a hotel/convention center/museum.

One of the reasons she was so fast was due to the widespread use of aluminum throughout. There was hardly any wood on board. No grand staircases; no fancy wood trim. The design allowed her to be not only fast, but fire resistant as well.

And therein was the major complaint. Her utilitarian interior appointments were simply too plain.

I truly do admire her lines, and her speed records are indeed impressive, but I'm afraid she didn't leave an endearing mark in the hearts of most of her passengers, at least not like her British counterparts.

the reason for no wood was fireproofing yes her superstructure was aluminum, but what gives her her spead is her hull design which remained top secret till the late 70's. Also her engines were naval aircrat carrier ones from the late 40's. Yes there was no magnificent wooden grand staircase, but she had her charm, if you want wood your boat is the ss america, our the queens, the united states was the equivelat of a powerboat.
