can anyone tell me if a 250 165 hp straight six is a good motor. it is 30 years old with 400 hrs

Those later model Chevy sixes are almost bomb proof. Keep on top of the oil changes, tune ups, ect and it will run a long time.

They were used in the Chevy Nova for years, they're great! The only thing different for marine was a 2bbl carb, as opposed to the Nova with a 1bbl. raising the hp from 150 to 165. I had one in a 18' Wellcraft Airslot, and rebuilt it, it was frozen due to owner neglect, then it was a fast boat after that 45mph easy!

That engine was not only used in the Nova, it was used across the entire GM line (except for Caddy) including light duty trucks.
