Hey guys, if I stain my wood transom replacement first will the fiberglass resin still stick to it for sealing purposes? If so can I put more than one coat of resin on it?

why would you want to stain it?....dont you like the color?

your thinking way too complicated.....throw it in there.....make sure it is flush and tight with the exterior glass take some peanut butter and fill the edges.....then glass the thing to the back of the boat.....literally done in under an hour (unless murphy shows up). after its glassed....and you dont knock any holes in it......your good for 20 years.

if you dont like the color of glass then you can gellcoat it any color you want.

cheers

I think you need to go into a little more depth as to what it is you plan on doing and why.

Re: Staining wood transom and then glassing

Maybe I should have been more specific. I'm replacing the wood transom in my '79 Starcraft SS. The boat is cream and gold colored so I want to stain the transom so the exposed part of the transom will be a brown color to kind of match the rest of the color scheme of the boat. All I want to do is stain the wood transom insert(preferably w/oil based stain then fiberglass it to seal it up real good before reinstalling it. Also is it ok to use two coats of glass? I want to seal this up real good. Oh, one more thing. I had to cut the splashwell drains to remove the old transom. Where would I find replacement drains?

It can be stained, but depending on the resin used and amount of glass, it will add color or possibly hide anything you do.

I don't think you should go with oil base just water base the oil can react with the fiberglass and stops it bonding to the wood,no prob putting 2 or 3 coats just wait till the first coat is tacky and apply the next or wait till the first coat is dry then wash it and give it a bit of a sanding to help the next coat stick. You should be able to get wooden drains rings from any marine shop.

Another matter is U.V. light protection. Exposed polyester resin will break down in sunlight. One reason for gelcoat is pigment to protect the fiberglass resin. If you want to protect stained wood I would think another product would be better. I know there are epoxy products that will stand up better in sunlight.

Epoxies are worse in UV light, they need to be clear coated to hold up.

Chaz do you know you've stumbled on probably the largest collection of Starcraft enthusiasts on the net? We'd love to see some pictures of your boat. Head down here http://forums.iboats.com/Starcraft_Boats

Hehe, yeah I've learned so much following everyone's restoration. Thanks everyone for posting your projects. Unfortunately I'm not up to snuff on posting pics on my computer. I'll have to get up to speed on that! I'm not doing a complete paint restore. Just replacing my transom and some plywood decking as well. I want to be on the water as soon as possible. Pike and muskie season is coming up quick.
