I have a 84 merc witha 5.7, I was thinkning of putting a stainless prop on it but a guy at a marina told me that he though a stainless prop would "probably" break the outdrive shaft. Whats everyones opinion on this ?? As I drove around the ozarks last weekend I saw plenty of boats sliped out of the water that were my vintage and had stainless props. Thanks

Re: stainless prop

An SS prop is fine if you have the money for them.

I personaly dont use them, but they wont break the shaft any more than an alum one will.

Do you have a big HP motor that you must get every amount of power to the water to go so fast that your hair fly's out?

My father in law has an 84 or 86 Sea Ray 230 Cuddy with a 5.7. He has always had a 3 blade stainless prop. So...??

That guy should be put on your Ignore List. He knows not of what he speaks.

Possibly he's referring to the fact that SS being stronger than AL or Comp., will not absorb impacts as much, and potentially transmit more impact to the lower unit, potentially causing more damage.

I'm not sure how true that is in the real world, but I'm way happier with SS than I was with AL.

Ha Ha thanks for the input..I had the feeling that the fella I was dealing with at the marina down there at the Ozarks was to busy and really didnt want to screw around with me.. thats why I asked here. It's just a stock 350 I was going to upgrade only because my aluminum one has a few pretty good size nicks it in and it needs replaced anyway..thanks again.

Nicked aluminum props can be repaired easily. Although not always cost effectively, depending on local rates.

Real quick...I had a good Al prop that got backed into some rocks (someone other than me) and had a few nicks. Performance sucked after. I put another true prop on and found a world of difference. I think as soon as you can switch to one you're happy with the better you might be. Good luck!

Re: stainless prop

And I do still have that nicked prop because it can be trued by a qualified person as stated.

I tried eye-balling it a bit with some large Channel Locks, but I'm sure you can figure that didn't work.
