Re: Stainless Steel Bolts/Nuts For mounting waterjacket/sidepods plus gaskets

on the water jacket cover i used alot becauseits a big open space and corrosion was eating my sides and around spark plugs so bad something had to be done :/

But the side pod covers (exuast port) I didn't even use that much.. i covered my finger in it and slimed it all around the gaskets evenly like nothing even squished out when i torqued.. Clean as a whistle

You should have seen the chucnks of corrosion i had in the motor before.. Then i had in some places only 1mm of clearance to the peehole.. Now even if a chunk breaks off it will come out

I aint an auto mechanic .. I aint a mechanic at all but in all of these ports only water flows and nothing else and the corrosion everywhere got under the gasket so i really had to seal them good and a thin sealer and i destroyed 2 gaskets in the process ($70 in australia) wouldn't work because i tried and it sprung leaks eveerywhere

I should be fine right??

also doesn't most of the water used in the cooling process escape through the exaust anyway.. the peehole is only like a sign water is circulating?

well you scared me so much i unscrewed the water jacket cover

Theres nothing there only the slightest bit of seepage you can hardly see it :/ All the gasket maker did was fill the voids and stop the leaks :/

:\

I did not see any one comment about SS bolts. I work with them every day where I work. Firstly unless they are some thing very special they will be soft. They love to gaul (bind up) and snap off. They sure look cool but I would really hesitate to run them into a block. Anti seize is the way to go. I just pulled the front control arm off one of my VW's It sure looked nasty but **** if the nut did not run right off. Glad I used it on there 8 years ago.

they are kinda soft..

these seem to be reinforced at the head.. for the big bolts threaded into my block anyway

The other ones i used for the cylinder head cover/water jacket cover.. sucked and i snapped a few :/

But they survived and i flush the motor everytime and i think they should come out in 10 years time if need be what do you think?

Hello
sorry to scare yo Y2j. was not my intention. if the block surfaces are that rough or corroded you may try a layer of JB weld or marine tex epoxy then us a flat file to smooth the surface again. this I have done with many a merc that the end of the cyl jug corroded. silicone sealants dont have any shear strenth. you will find that after a few heating and cooling cycles it will start leaking again. OMC Gel seal will acually fill quite a large gap and it only dries if there is no oxygen(anarobic) to many times I have had to fix things that silicone tore up. you would not belive how much of the stuff I have pulled out of oil pump intake screens. there are much better sealnts avalible. ask your auto store to let you see the fel-pro catalog. I am sorry about your taking it back apart I did not mean to scare you just be aware that as it breaks off it may get trapped in a water passage and cause a localized hot spot and mechanical damage.
good luck and keep posting :)

there no exess inside.. Actually you can hardly see where the silicone is when i took it off..

I have a gasket as well so its squished down but it hasn't seeped basically for it to tear away the silicone it would neeed to take chucnks of the gasket as well

I did have one spot where corrosion ate away around the spark plug and i fixed it with some quiksteel (like jb weld i think) its this putty in a tube you knead and then put on where needed

;)

all the voids where basically like hard to see.. they were to small to fill with bog (jb) and just the gasket would seal them but i decided to put the thinnest smear in those areas
