Stainless Steel Prop Recommendation

I have a 1996 Johnson 112 SPL and have been running a 13.75 X 15 Aluminum prop OEM P/N, 391198. I would like to upgrade to a stainless steel. The boat is a Seaswirl Striper 1730 and is loaded with batteries and fishing gear, it's heavy. The aluminum prop I have does a good job but needs replacing due to wear and tear. Michigan Wheel Prop Selector recommends a 13 X 19 Stainless and Overtons Prop Selector recommends several Solas including a 13.5 X 15, 13.3 X 17 and a 13 X 19. Any suggestions of which will still get me on plane quickly and add a little more top end ? My current WOT is about 5200 - 5400 RPM. Thanks for any help you can give.

I'm sure we'll be traveling (moving to the prop section) but that's OK. At 5400 you'll want to get the r's up as much as possible to keep the motor living as long as possible. If it were mine I'd stick with the 15 pitch and raise the motor to gain overall performance. Remember we're looking for about 400 rpm.

Chaser, I assume you wear the prop out by hitting bottom? If you aluminum prop is wearing out, and you are not hitting anything, something is amiss. Prop Ventilation maybe?

I find that you pick up a couple hundred RPM when you switch to SS from aluminum with the same sized prop. The OEM SS prop #176571 is 13.75 X 15 for example.

You will get improved performance with a new propeller over a pitted or chipped one anyway, regardless of the material, all other things being equal.

BTW, The superseding # for your existing aluminum propeller is 763466.

Chris1956,

I've hit a few items (large tree branches, etc) floating down river when running before dawn. It's put a few bends and chips in it and it is slightly out of balance.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll look for a match to the SS OEM #176571

Re: Stainless Steel Prop Recommendation

I can't seem to locate this part number as suggested, "OEM SS prop #176571 is 13.75 X 15"

Does anyone have the correct part number to a SS match to my current Aluminum prop OEM #391198 ?

I have found a SS prop 13 1/4 X 17", would this change the performance compared to a Al 13.75 X 15". I need to maintain the ability to get on plane due to the weight of the boat.

More pitch will probably mean less rpm. Remember, you're looking for more rpm, not less.

If your dealer can't locate a 176571, the superseding BRP prop is the 13-7/8 X 15 Viper. It is part #763929.

Actually found a Solas Titan #2441-138-15 on IBoats with the exact specs, 13.75 X 15. If it pushes the boat as good as the Al prop I'll be happy, if it improves performance it would be even better. Thanks
