Re: Stalling 89' OMC 4.3

I/O Waldo - you are correct, she purrs like a kitten at idle.

Vacuum leak...wishful thinking.....

Took her out again last weekend after I replaced the coil. She fired right up, and I could reach WOT without any problems. About 4400 rpms & 45-50mph. After a quick run around the lake I slowed her down a bit and noticed a knocking noise. Checked the oil and she's bone dry.

OOOOPS.

After filling her up w/ oil I tried to run her on the muffs. The starter turned over 3 times then quit. Pulling the engine out tonight, but I'm pretty sure she's toasted. I'll keep you guys posted on what I find.

He may need a few while pulling the engine too...Sounds like that problem just got very expensive!

Looks like the previous owner didn't winterize the engine and let the block crack.... New (rebuilt) long block is on the way.

Rat,

I know you took a fuel sample but if it didn't come from the very bottom of the tank you could be missing a layer of alcohol/water garbage which will not burn. Out on the water it gets shaken up and the engine sounds like it's missing.

Sorry about the block and good luck with it.

Re: Stalling 89' OMC 4.3

lrlima -

I ordered this engine from a place in Omaha, NE called the engine connection. $795.00 for the short block, $1,495.00 for the long block. A few locals told me to be careful when ordering the engine, as these particular pre-vortec models come with a mechanical fuel pump which is easily overseen. 1 year warranty, roller cam, complete gasket set & oil pump. Unfortunately I wasn't able to recieve the $80.00 core since the block is cracked.

One of my concerns is that this engine has hyperutectic pistons in lieu of forged. I've always been told that this is not good practice for marine applications. Others told me that since its only a V6 (and I'm not running nitrous) that I'll be fine.

The engine is going in the boat regardless (on the stand at home, dropping it in the boat tonight) but any additional insight on hyperutectic vs. forged pistons would be appreciated. This may also be a good subject for a new thread.

Thank you all for your help!
