I have a 2000 3.0 Mercruiser engine. I am stalling when docking switching from forward to revese.(several times) This is causing me to hit the dock. Also the throttle is stiff. Could this be an adjustment? If so where and how?
Thanks
Bill D

I used to have this problem with my last boat, it had an outboard motor though. Check to make sure the spark plugs are good, the distributer cap and rotor are OK, and that the idle speed is set right. Also the way you shift into gear has a lot to do with it. Once you shift out of forward you need to give the engine enough time to settle down before shifting into reverse.

Most likely its your lower shift cable. This problem is VERY common.

Shift Cable

if you are chunking this drive from forward to reverse, hitting the throttle, and backing down all in a very short period of time, you can expect it to stall. I think any engine would.... take it a little easier and slower and you most likely will have no more problems......good luck

First thing you should check is your throttle pre-load.Make sure your idle speed is set about 650RPM in forward gear in the water.Pull the shifter into neutral, remove the throttle cable when you reinstall it there should be just enough pressure to return throttle back to the idle stop.If this does not help it could in your shift interupter switch.Don't forget to give it a firm positive shift, shifting to slowly will cause engine to stall and gear damage.

Try the most simple approach. Most of the time it is because of the way the person is shifting. If you shift too fast the interupt switch will stall the motor. If you shift too slowly the interrupt switch will stall the motor. You have to find a way to shift that is just the right speed. If all attempts at this fail, you have lost nothing and need a cable adjustment.
