More details might be useful. For example, does it stall right away, after it gets good and warmed up, when off plane, at full throttle, under heavy load, on sunny days, only when there is no one around to lend assistance?

I probably wont be able to help, but there are plenty here who know waaay more than I do.

Bigjer,

It sounds like you need to replace the impeller. If it's not sucking the antifreeze while trying to winterize it then the impeller is shot. What was the temperature running before it stalled on the water? Replacing the impeller is pretty easy and cheap. If it sat for two years then yes, the gas is bad.

Don't sweat it. I still type with 1 finger. Pratice makes perfect. Look in the bright side of the stalls. It could be a stuck on choke valve. That would account for it stalling everytime it fully warms up. You need some luck.

Re: stalls out on the water

Bigjer
The more information you provide the better the chance anyone can help you. Since it is your first boat we can give you a few tips.

Never turn the motor or start it with out water going to the impeller. They are made of rubber and the minute you start turning impeller without water it will rub the metal houseing and start to melt. also it will rub the ends off the impeller.

Water temperature for boat run 150 to 170 degrees. So next time you launch and idle out watch you temp guage. It should move up to about 150 degrees and holed there. If it continues to clime then the impeller in not pumping water or the thermostate is not opening. If anyone has run the motor with out water going to water pump then it is shot and will need to be replaced.

If your motor is a 1984 then it should be a Stringer Series 800.
I disagree that the water pump on a stringer outdrive is easy and cheap to replace.

If it is 1985 or later then it will be a Cobra and impeller is easy to replace.

To tell the difference look how the out drive is raised.
If it has two hydraulic cylinders then it is a Cobra 1985 until OMC went under.

If it uses a big quarter round gear on the port side of the outdrive then it is a OMC series 800 Stringer.

You will fix it quicker and cheaper if you troubleshoot it first and find the cause. If you just change all the parts you listed you could add another problem. Know that you can not use automotive parts in most places, so buy Marine OEM parts.

Next time your take it out take a inductive timing light, Dwell meter, a flashlight and a few tools.
Make sure it is not over heating then take it out for a run until it starts to fail. Then check the dwell and use the inductive timing light near the spark plugs to make sure each cylinder is getting spark.
Remove the backflame arester and make sure the choke is open. With engine off have some operate the throttle and see if it squirting fuel in.

Remove the fuel cap and see if it runs, it could just be just a blocked fuel vent.

Report back all the details and some one will help.

Good Luck
