Ok, my turn. 1987 19' Bayliner Center Console w/1986 Force 125HP outboard. 4 cylinder and 2 carbs. 30 gals fresh 87 fuel. New plugs and filter. Recently acquired and today was first time on water. Ran well at home w/flush device.
Off-Loaded at ramp and it fired right up in neutral. Went to place in reverse and it stalled out. I played the game of "Start and Stall" for about 10 minutes, Forward and Reverse, no difference.
Pulled off engine cover to further investigate. Nothing obviously wrong. Fired it up w/cover off-Varoom! Full rpm's. Ok, so my magic touch did it again, put cover back on, engine still ran in neutral, but still stalled in gear. Gotta do something, hogging ramp space and people are starting to stare.
Pulled cover, fired up and pulled away from dock. Except for the noise, she ran quite well. Got up on plane decently enough and ran about 39 to 40 mph (by my speedo) at not quite 5000 rpm's (again, by my tach). Spent over 2 hours on the river and lake in Central Florida, but when I got back to port, it still stalled with the cover on (too chicken to try it on the open water!)
Now I did notice that w/cover on, there was a lot of churning water out the exhaust.
But w/cover off, no disturbance except for pump water out of "Power Flow" twin pee holes.
Could I have wrong cover (don't think so). The inlet isn't clogged. Also, where does the air filter go? My Seloc manual is rather complete, but I can't find the answer. Hope I covered all the bases and sorry for making this too long. Now you know my sad story and THANKS for any help.
P.S.- With cover on, the rpm's would only go to about 1800. Take cover off and rpm's would increase by a few hundred rpm (just by taking cover off).
P.P.S.- Please remember, It ran very well (I think) with cover OFF.

This is a good one, Could it be evil spirits?
First is the vent area on the cover opean no extra foam covering them? You said plugs and fuel filter were changed how is the routing of above things? could you be pinching the fuel line with the cover,or crosing spark wires when you put cover on, any loose wire connection's ?
Good Luck

I've read of this happening here. They never followed-up on what caused it,or even if he found the problem.
I had the noise baffle material fall out of a merc, and contact the flywheel. It carried on,but didn't stall. There is no air breather on the motor.
The cover is moving something, i would think.
But you got me.

Re: Stalls with cover on

Jelly bean, I might have the answer for you....
Whenever you find an outboard that doesnt run with the cover on, it is because its not getting enough air to run properly...now, you may go an look at the air holes in the cowling, but thats not it....if there is an EXHAUST leak inside the cowling, the cover holds the exhaust gases inside and starves the engine for clean air...look inside the lower cowling at the rubber hose that hooks to the back side of those 'powerflow holes' is it leaking? you probably wont find much unless you look for this with the boat in the water....on the garden hoses there is simply not enough back pressure in the exhaust to show a leak....

Exhaust port cover or powerhead base gasket. You may see a water leak also around the powerhead somewhere while it's running in the water.

Guys, a buddy had a smaller older engine, same problem. the seals around the lower unit went allowing the exhaust gases to escape into the engine compartment. Take the cover off and it ran fine.

I had the same problem on 4th of July at Lake Havasu. I needed a new manifold gasket. It cost only a couple of bucks for the part and 1 hour of labor. Pretty cheap!

Re: Stalls with cover on

definately check clanton't idea, it's happened to me when plug wires were routed properly. Make sure nothing is getting pinched when you put it on. Good Luck

Re: Stalls with cover on

Look on the inside of the cover for burnt marks or pitts possibly caused by arcing.
good luck REX P.

Re: Stalls with cover on

Thanks all for the help. I found the spring clamp that holds the bellows for the "Power Flow" was rusted in two on the under side. It looks like exhaust was coming from there. I'm going to river test tommorrow, so I'll see if that fixed it. Once again, thanks for info and help.
