I was out last weekend picking up some nice winter springs- a typical January day, cold, windy, but the fish were coming in.I see the next boat over has one on, and the guy steps over the transom onto the swim grid to net it.Really dumb. One wave and the boat lurches and he's in the chuck- and of course with it being winter, he's got a heavy coat, heavy pants, heavy boots-what are the chances his partner could even cut the gear, turn the boat around and pick him up before he sank- oh, yeah, no PFD either.

When I'm boating in frigid water, I always wear my PFD under my coat. That way the rescue team can recover my frozen body from the surface rather than having to call the dive team. I'd hate to inconvenience them like that. :D

There's a reason they're bright orange. That would be so thay can be easily spotted from ther air when you are floating face down.

I've been in 40 degree water...it gives you 3 adams apples.

I wear a ''mustang Floater coat'' .They were developed here because a lot of guys don't wear PFD's, but do wear coats. They are an approved PFD,some come with a neaprene''diaper'' you can unhook and fasten under your groin to preserve body heat if you do take a tumble into the chuck. The best course of action is not to do dumb things like taking a leak overboard or standing on a swim grid which any wave could put you off balance and cause an overboard situation.But- at least floater coats are worn, when traditional PFD's generaly are stowed.
