YES I have 1984 140hp Johnson TLCRD , which I have just rebuilt . When I started the engine It started right up ran well , peed well out the pee hole which is on the bubble back. I don't know if Panicked or not but the #1and # 3cyl seemed much hotter than the #2and #4cyl. At that time I did not have a temp gauge to check. Now all that being said I went ahead and double checked myself on proper head gasket installation and they were fine. I don't think there is anyway to get the base gasket on where as to block any water passages. I have read several forums comments and this is maybe not uncommon but never get any resolve from anyone forum. The Thermostats are new and have been checked in hot water to see if they open. My Question is what else do I need to check before restarting engine. Oh YES the rubber passage diverter have been checked as well . What have I missed.

Thanks for all the replies ,I have been a little detained with covid the last few days. All the cyl wire are on properly as I did check before I started the engine up and yes the deflectors in the block are what I am talking about. How hot is hot at that time I could not touch it but could the other side. since then rechecked all. I did pull the hoses of thermostat housing and started the engine and it had very good flow , reinstalled the hoses and restarted engine all temp are fine now . Could I have had an air block Or is it more likely I just panicked just a little and does air blocks happen in these engines note the the engine is peeing strong. Yes sir I am running it on muffs

Was that 34 year oldie motor run in salt or fresh water scenarios ? Run it hard at open water and check if the temp sensor if counting with one doesn't trigger and slows down the rpm. If all peachy, nothing to worry about.

The water that comes out the tell tale does NOT circulate through the motor.-----It indicated that pump is working.----Tell tale does NOT indicate proper cooling !

Well, until OP doesn't report if all went OK on a long wot run won't know if the motor is cooling properly or not ? One scenario is testing any motor on muffs, other much different testing a motor at load powering a boat at open water.

If wanting to perform a water heat test in terra firme check the water temp coming out the middle prop on your palm when at idle and on muffs to feel the temp difference when the thermo opens and closes. If having a water port around the upper middle leg can check the temp there too.

Did your rebuild include a water pump?

Get that thing off the muffs and on the lake to see if there really is a problem. You can't check a water pump (or cooling) on muffs.
