star wars fans please help

ok i know they did all these knew star wars movies. but what was the first movie back im guessing in the 70s? was it called just star wars? my son wants to get them but i dont know where to start. i picked up a 3 disc trilogy. but one of them is called a new hope. was this the first one made?

I do some special effects work for the local film industry so I am familiar with the IMDB web-site.
