Hi,
After 8 hrs 2 snaped merc tools, one can of wd 40 and a new oxygen mapp gas torch to heat the 85 merc alpha pin all I am left with is banged up hands :). I am about to put in a new outdrive and thought I would change out the bellows. while I am here. Gimbal feels smooth and bellows look good. I do not know last time the where changed. At this point I am tempted to just put the drive on and pray.

I was thinking of drilling the hing pin and trying a screw extractor any suggestions?

Thanks

Are those pins like an allen head or Torx head?
Maybe you could take it to someone that has an impact wrench they could put on it..

It's probably too hard to drill accurately.Did you actually snap 2 Merc tools,or strip them ? If they snapped.the pin may have been welded in.If they stripped the pin is worn.

If they are stripping, weld the tool to the pin and remove it.

They are the torx/starbit type. I snapped the two merc tools after putting a 2 ft breaker bar socket wrench on them to try to get additional leverage to move them.

No sign of them being welded on as port sing came of without a problem. I think I may try the "drill a small hole in the center to try to get heat down to the threads as suggested in other post. Has anyone had luck with that?
thanks

Instead of the official merc tool that keeps breaking, many suggest a regular allen wrench - 1/2" I believe. It supposedly works even better than the offical merc socket. I haven't tried it myself, but many here on the board suggest it. Even using the hex part of a cold chisel, which is apparently the same size as the allen wrench. d:)

Sounds like the tools are actually breaking in two,not stripping,I can't understand how,but that's what the post says. But that is a good link you listed.
