Starchief-specific Qs for the experts

in addition to my usual annoying queries, I have a few that are specific to Starchiefs (and maybe Chieftain/Islanders) so i decided to start a thread. Hoping someone more experienced can educate me. my boat has a # of mods that were done professionally enough that i can't tell what is factory.

1. What are THESE and what are they for?

2. In order to pull the decking from the cockpit area, do I have to remove the consoles/cabin supports?


3. My donor boat came with a nice 19 gal alum belly tank, which I?d like to use to supplant my bow tank. It looks like it should fit between main hull stringers just ahead of engine room. Anyone put a tank there, or better yet, have pix of a nekkid, deckless boat I could look at? for this Q, the answer should be the same for Holidays since they use same hull.

4. My bow tank is alum and according to prev owner, is 22 gal. is this factory?

Barato, the Starchief I had was an OB but I would guess its the same set up. Yes the consoles have to be pulled up. The floor follows through to the step down in the cabin. Side panels too. When you remove the consoles look for brackets that are attached to the cabin top at the sides, they are well hidden. I don't have a clue what those 'bits' are, can we get a better pic? I had a thread going before I sold my Starchief under 63 Starchief, there are pics of a naked bottom there.

I'd like to see better pics of the bits, too, the wood holder doesn't "look" original.

I have a pic gallery ( when you open it, you can make it larger by clicking the Square with an Arrow on it, in the upper right corner,. ) showing my under floor fuel tank.

When I installed the tank, I was concerned with rubbing, and had a large peice of Roofing Rubber, so I layed it down before I dropped the tank in, and it completely protects the tank from the boat on the bottom and sides.

I also have rubber washers between the bracket and the tank as the tank had an imperfect surface around the embedded nuts. So i used the rubber washers to insulate and cushion a little, the tank isn't held up by the brackets though, and mine was a little snug up front, but I coerced it in a bit with my BIG Foot. ( no pounding was necessary, ) it probably would've fit great if not for the rubber.

I also made sure the Fill/Vent Hoses didnt sag on their way to the tank. ANd have a peice of heater hose (one side slit) protecting the tank from the Alum Stinger it runs through.

Look for somthing threaded that those things will screw into for possible lifting handles as in removing a tight fitting deck plate. Maybe not.

yeah, i was afraid that would be the answer on the floor.....which means it ain't coming out, til it's rotted. i may try to "skin" over my side panels with some veneer down the road, as while they're mostly in good shape, top layer has delaminated and is bowing out. not sure if it's worth the effort to install aux fuel tank or if i should just carry jerrycans for extended trips. since it looks like i'd have to saw an access hole in cockpit floor.

on the Unknown Threaded Objects, they're a standard 1/4-20 thread. the table/hatch has threaded bosses in the "wood" side which these fit...i'd been using them to attach it to the bases but wasn't sure if this was what they were supposed to do. i'll post a pic of them in place.
