I think my Starcraft is a 1969 ? SER# 69 22332
Mod: Starchief - V 18 OB
outboard model
I started restoring this boat in August 2010, it needs a floor, transom, paint, molding, ect. and I need help doing it, I never painted a boat before and I have looked at all the nice work on the forums. I will upload some pixs when I find out how to do that.
I have the inside ready to apply Gluvit and the 3/4 inch plywood cut to fit .
This is a winter project for me and I may be slow at doing this boat.
Please give any info you can, I need all your help.................> Glenn

Welcome Glenn! Cool boat. My buddy and I missed out on a similar one in the fall that got sold moment before we got there. We ended up getting a 21'. We would have been better off with the 18'. What motor are you going to run?

Great project, I like that boat:)

It sounds like you already have a good plan of attack. Check out iboats member wfralpacas thread, he has done a great job on the exact same hull.

Welcome Glenn! Looks like you have a sweet project there! I am on what seems to be an ultra slow rebuild pace myself.

There is tons of info around here and lots of folks who are eager to help. If you click on the Starcraft link in my sig you'll have plenty to digest from guys who have gone before us!

If I can get this boat to look nice I may put a new mercury 90hp optmax on it,
if the money is there ? I have a 1968 100hp Mercury in the barn that is restored
( tower of power engine ) but I don't like the power trim pump in the boat and
I don't like the 6 gal tank with the mix oil.

LOL, oh don't worry Glen, these guys aren't about to let you do something wrong or refuse to give advice/help. Thats what makes this SC forum so special, great people & great boats. Congrats and Welcome

Nice boat and welcome to the club Glenn. You have the model I would have liked to have found. Mine has the I/O and I would rather have the outboard like yours. In my case I find that my boat is stern heavy. If you can swing it, move as much weight forward as you can. In my case I have the battery, fuel tanks (2) and motor all at the back of the boat. It would be nice to relocate a tank to the belly as forward as possible and the batteries up in the cutty. That may help, as my boat tends to wander at low speeds. Yours may be lighter in the stern with an outboard but since you are restoring you may want to give the weight distribution some thought. If it?s not possible to relocate stuff then you can do what others have done and added some weight up front in the form as a large cooler with ice water and some cold ones.

I just opened my can of Gluvit up that I bought and its hard as a rock. Today was a good day to paint it on, I call the supply store and they said that Gluvit has a problem with all cans shipped after July this year. Anyone have this problem ?

That's the first time anybody has ever been unhappy with Gluvit.:p

Hope they can ship out a new batch for you, a Homer Simpson-type employee must have mixed some of the catalyst into the normal stuff:eek::D

Like your new project. My 16 SS was a little rougher inside and much worse on the outside . My wife called it the Getto Boat. My hull reqiured more work than I wanted. The inside work was fun and not that expensive. You know we all have FREE labor LOL good luck, my project took about 3 months and a lot of hours. About 16 to 18 hundred total cost for everything B-M-T and material. At least thats what I told my bride. You cant buy a like new boat for that kind of money.

Glen,
I just sold a 69 almost identical to yours to a buddy who is going to resto in the spring. My new to me resto project is a 1974 18' Chieftain that I'll be doing at the same time. There are some subtle differences in our boats. His is supposed to be the same year (according to Smoker craft and the forum - no markings what so ever). Ours have no bow rails. The 74 has a ventilation scoop amidships on each gunwal, the 69 has one on the bow. Like you, ours need everything.
Looks like you need the railing end caps too. Let me know if you find them and 'll do the same. My railing fittings are so bad that I'll probably have to get new ones but they are easy to find.

I hope they made good on the gluvit.

I'd go with the optimax for sure!

Winter is here......Christmas and New Years ...........OVER.......Back to work on the Starchief......To cold outside to work on boat , so I warmed up the wood shop and I removed all the wood parts last fall....Side dash first, its has some angle cuts and a little grinding on edges....here are some pixsPicture 012.jpgPicture 011.jpgPicture 014.jpgView attachment 79848Picture 009.jpg

i love how you didn't wait til the decor was put away or the Seasonally Relevant tablecloth taken off to get back to the more important things in life....nice looking wood! this may be the most important part of the boat to make look nice, as you'll be looking at it all the time....
