Good morning fellas, new to the forum here. Im looking at purchasing the 3rd boat in my life and wanted some insight. (I currently don't own one). Im looking at a 16 foot starcraft center console. Has a 2003 25 horse Tracker engine with 75 hours. The motor is currently pull start and everything else in controlled on the console but they have the kit to change it to electric start and that comes with the boat. It needs some mods inside cause it currently has no seats or anything but the interior is in good shape. I kind of like the idea I can set it up however I choose. My biggest questions...
1.) How much of a hassle/expense is it to hook up that elec. start?
2.) How fast will that engine push that boat with 500 pounds or so of people plus gear( its just two of us striper hunters but we're big boys)
3.) Any idea what the engine is worth if I wanted to possibly trade it in at a marina for an older, larger engine.

Any help would be appreciated. I will keep everyone posted. And if anyone has a 15-17 foot aluminum center for sale or knows someone who does, drop me a line---Thanks!

Do you have any pics? 16' vary greatly and some I can see having a 25HP motor but for most I'd think it would be woefully underpowered. You don't have a "Tracker" motor. It's probably a Tracker branded Johnson or Evinrude. You might want to try to better determine that in order to figure out the value (and you certainly don't want to advertise it as a Tracker). Typically a good running 25 should be worth about $800 or so. Where are you in PA?

I assume it's aluminum; would like to know the hull design (jon, mod V, deep v) as that has a big effect on motor size.

When I hear striper fishing I picture cold open water, like Chesapeake Bay, Long Island Sound, etc. You do not want to be underpowered; that is a major safety risk. If you are tlaking about a calm lake where if you break down you might die only from boredom, that's different.

I had 16' starcrafts with 55's on them. I would not want to go much smaller. I took it out in the bay several times and you need that power.

You won't have any trouble selling a running 25 horse--very popular size. $800 plus $100 for the starter kit sounds right. Hower, buying an old boat without a motor (or seats), then finding a reliable motor for it, and rigging it, can be more time and money than just moving on to the next ad in Craigslist.

I had a 16' Starcraft with a side console, set up like a bass boat with a 40 hp Merc. The hull was rated for a 60hp max. The Eagle fishfinder had a star wheel speedo (not too accurate) that showed a top speed of 34mph @ WOT, 2 good sized occupants, fuel and gear. Would have liked a bigger engine for those long runs back to the ramp, but the 40 would troll all day long and burn very little gas.

Hey EZ, I think your right on the underpowered, I just have been looking for awhile and getting antsy. I'm about 2 hours or so east of you.

Its a deep V with Deep sides. And thanks for the thoughts on the motor set up, I don't want to get into an adventure that ends up costing more than the 1500 I have to spend on the boat! The search continues I suppose.

A buddy of mine had that boat- nice set up for fishing. The 25 will be underpowered and I doubt you'll get anything above 20 mph with it but the boat itself was great. The wide gunnels were perfect for rod holders and the center console layout made for a nice stable boat. Sell off the 25 and use the funds to find a 50hp minimum. My bud had a 75 on his and it would run in the high 30's with a normal load. Nice ride on the Ohio River where we spent most of out time. Good boat for lake stripers though- Cumberland, Norris, etc.

If is the boat I thinking of, you will be very unhappy with that 25.
What does the transom sticker rate it for. Bet. max 70hp.
Pics of the boat would really help.
