Re: Starcraft 16' SS restoration

So........... I spent about 4 hours yesterday scraping, polishing, cleaning the bottom of the hull to apply Gluevit. How long does it normaly take this stuff to dry?? I kept the heat on in the garage all night, kept it around 65-70 degrees. When I go out this morning the stuff is still tacky to the touch. Is this normal? I mixed the entire quart and all of the hardener. Just about did not have enough to cover everything. Did I put it on too thick? Can you put it on too thick?

Any help from you experts out there??
Am I just being too impatient?:(:(:(:(

Mine did the same thing. Give it a full 24 hours.

Just my 2 cents..It took almost 3 days or mine to loose its tackiness. I layed it down heavy..and the garage was only mid 50's after I turned the heat off.

I am keeping my heat going and it seems to be drying now. Just a little impatient:rolleyes:

Re: Starcraft 16' SS restoration

I am getting ready to order my resin and cloth on Monday for the deck. How much do y'all think I will need? I hate to run out mid job and have to make another trip, although I seem to do it on a regular basis!!:D

I am going to use PLYTANIUM plywood, anyone used it and is there any problems I need to look for? It looks as if it is coated with something already. I will still be glassing over it though.

I am cutting out a template for the transom today. When I cut my "cores" for the transom, how much smaller do I need to make them to accomadate for the glass and resin? I was thinking 1/4" on all sides. Does this sound correct or do I need to go in a different direction??

I am glassing up my transom today!! I have a question though:confused:
On the outside of the stern there was a 1/2" plywood. Do I need to replace that as well? Or will I be OK when I maount a motor without it?

Not a problem to duplicate and replace, just wondering if it is needed.

Rare to see one without it but others will tell us why. When I take my ob off I might replace mine with a piece of teflon from a local plastic fabricator. It will never rot, no paint needed and the white color will match my hull. :)

I left it off my Jupiter when I redid my transom. If I were you I'd either leave it off or replace it with something non-wood.

I went ahead and made a new one for mine.
I used oil base paint to seal it. I just figured a little more strength wouldn,t hurt. Looks good too.

Re: Starcraft 16' SS restoration

I have been making some progress on my restoration, no pics, maybee some later.

Got the transom replaced and the splashwell back in. and flipped over to start sanding and painting.

I have a couple of questions for you experts out there...........

1. Can you give me a name of the zinc chromate primer or where it is easily obtained?

2. will I need to prime the entire hull? or just the bare spots?
(existing paint is attached well, just going to rough up, smooth out with 220 grit)

3. what is the "roll and tip" painting method? I will be using Pettit Easypoxy paint.

Thanks for listening.

Re: Starcraft 16' SS restoration

On the holes in the deck, you might consider marine tex. Others might chime in for this application to ensure that my suggestion is not faulty, but I've used it on aluminum in the past. It gets rock hard. It has held up for many years on my lone star for deck holes. I can't recall, but I may have used it on some tiny holes in the aluminum in the transom.

1. ZC is pretty standard, spray cans found at big box stores or paint shops

2. If you have bare aluminum it's best to coat the entire hull lightly then primer coats, if the paint is intact then you can roll and tip right over it without ZC

3. Roll with rollers and tip with little foam pads- here is some interesting reading on this method I find helpful:

Re: Starcraft 16' SS restoration

I just used Easypoxy on mine and it is AWESOME paint. Paint your boat like you'd paint your living room. Cut in with any old brush (foam not necessary) then roll the rest with a foam roller. The good news is the paint flows well and will level out. Don't panic when you see tons of bubbles from the roller. They WILL lay down. The bad news is the paint flows well :p so that means it will run. Keep a diligent eye on it and fix the runs before it sets up.

Re: Starcraft 16' SS restoration

Well I tore into the sanding and priming today!!!!! What a diiference sandpaper makes. While I was sanding I found a Hull ID# that was etched into the transom. I would like to track it down to find out the exact year but have had no luck. Does anybody know where I could look this up?

The number is :

INZ061287047

S/N 978027 (located on Starcraft plate)

I have found that INZ = Indiana Homemade boats

This is used for older boats that do not have the current format for HIN's
I have looked through the Indiana BMV site but can't get anywhere.
I have tried several other sites but they all come back that the number is invalid.

Now what to do with the 1973 Chrylser tri-hull????????????

I guess I could put it on CL.............

Free to good home, boat, no trailer, no motor, just needs a good cleaning and a couple of quick fixes. Should not be a problem if you are handy!!!!

Thanks again to everyone on this forum. Without all the information posted on here I would not be able to complete this project.
