I couldn't read the capacity plate on my starcraft, so I got a replacement from the state of pa. I recieved the plate in the mail yesterday, and it shows the max hp capacity of 190hp. I found a few places online last night that would have me thinking that the original plate from starcraft may have been 135hp, but not confirmed. Anyone have a 1991 190 superfisherman that has a capacity plate that can confirm?

The new plate is from the pa fish and game, and is a legal replacement, even to the coasties. I called and confirmed before I sent away for it.

if the original starcraft plate is in fact only 135hp, and I follow the pa capacity of 190hp and go with a 150 or a 175(which I will), am I overpowering?

Found this on a search for your boat's spec. (Hope it shows up). Maybe it will help

Also, looked at YachtsWorld.com for your boat, but only found an 18' 2009 SFM, and it had a capacity plate photo that indicaated a max hp. of 190. So I am thinking there was a change in construction to cause such a large jump in hp rating.

yea, Iboats and nada has the max hp rating at 135hp for a '91 190. In the late 90's, they changes the hull style of the sfm's and fishmasters. The models changed with a deeper deadrise and an increased 99" beam and were renamed as a 196. Not shure what year they changed.

I though they may have screwed up and looked at the wrong year, but I talked to fish and game and they said they calculate their ratings using a formula, not by looking up information on the boats.

So the question begs "where did they get their spec's) And since the manufacturer used a formula probably provide by the CG, then did it change?

If it was me, I would go by the actual, manufacturer provided capacity information, not by what is in conflict with it.

Of course, you are looking for justification for doing what in your heart you know is wrong but want to spread the responsibility around. Otherwise you wouldn't be asking your original questions when you already had the answers.

yea, I would love to find an actual photo of a capacity plate to confirm. Iboats and nada have the beam wrong at 92", with a manufacture stated beam of 90", so do they have the max hp rating right? You are also correct in assuming that I would like to go with a larger engine, but I will not rig an outboard over the rated capacity on the plate. Its not worth it to me.

I'm looking at repowering next year with a 130hp etec. The 150hp weighting in at a few more lbs would be my choice if it was legal. Just not shure what is right. The pa plate is legal in pa to the coast gaurd and the fish and game, but I don't wan't to run into problems in the future.

oh, and contrary to what you stated above, I don't know in my heart what is wrong or right in this situation. thats why I'm asking. If I wanted to do it and didn't care weather it was right or wrong, I would just go ahead and do it. I don't need confirmation from the internet crowd to feel good about a bad choice I would make.

I don't think any enforcement officer would know if your boat supposed to have a 135 or 150hp outboard.
If the capicity plate is legit,I can't foresee any problems, not over 15hp,maybe 5mph and alittle weight.
Is it right;thats going to be your decision.
