Re: starcraft 1992 cc mr170

I think it's a 12 it came with a motor that i bought for the boat. The boat came with a 48 special but I wanted more power and I found a 70hp for it.The motor has no spark so I guess once I get it mounted I'll have some work to figure out whats wrong with it.I did a compression test and all 3
cylinders were 110 even across. The guy that I bought it from said it ran great when he took it off the boat do to rotten transom.Hope I can get it going without spending a lot of money. founds are tight.

Bob--

your problem is quite likely to be the "power pack" for the ignition, chronic failure item on older OMCs and often goes bad with very little or no warning. what year is motor?

Re: starcraft 1992 cc mr170

that's well within the year range. the problem is chronic enough that i'd take a spare if i were going on a major trip to Baja or the Yukon. or well offshore.

it's not a cheap piece tho (my '89 8hp twin's was over $100) and of course nonreturnable so you might swing over to the OMC section and look up diagnostic procedures to confirm whether one is bad. i ended up installing an aftermkt one from Sierra Marine after 2d one died and have been happy with it, but even now i carry a spare.

I got the top and side rails sanded and primed today. One good coat of self etching primer and 2 good coats of clean metal primer. Next is the navy blue for the
stripe and rails and onto the floor. I was in lowes looking at plywood and found this sub flooring plywood called dryply it's water repellent. What do you guys think for the floor. 25 a sheet verse 118 for marine plywood. I'm going to coat the crap out of it with spar varnish anyway.

Don't use it. It's interior grade wood with some friggin' Thompson's on it.

Re: starcraft 1992 cc mr170

so $93 per sheet difference x what, 2-3 sheets for a 17'? so maybe $186-279 difference total. now, how many hours will you spend gutting the boat and redoing a floor? maybe at least 50, just for estimation purposes? can't speak for you but i'm an Extreme bottom feeder, and even i would spend the extra $ to avoid having to redo that job in a few years.....

Lots of us used exterior grade. I recommend the Arauco brand which Lowes carries. Very nice stuff and practically void-free.

Re: starcraft 1992 cc mr170

I got the first coat of the royal blue on the top and side rail. Now I need a good day with no rain and then I can wet sand it and give it another coat and hope that it will be enough coats. Then I have to sand the splash well and paint that and the rear transom. Can wait to get the motor back on and get that running.

Epoxy is a better waterproofing. It lacks UV protection though. I used 3 coats of epoxy and three coats of Spar on the Sea Scamp's seats, waterproofing and UV protection at it's best. Attractive too. If the wood doesn't see UV rays then just epoxy it. MY .02 cents.

West System is not cheap. I think the guys use U.S. Composites for resonable priced epoxy.

Don's dead on there. the stuff i've just epoxied (no spar varnish topcoat) shows major UV deterioration of the epoxy after a year....and those wood parts are probably out in the sun for an aggregate total of 3 weeks or so. but the thinned epoxy sure does seem to penetrate the wood fibers better.

Re: starcraft 1992 cc mr170

This really stinks, Every time I get a day off to work on the boat, It rains. I really need to get this paint job finished before the cold weather gets here.
I only have couple of weeks it then it's going to have to wait for next year to be painted. I guess I could start working on the interior.

That boat is looking good. You're going to have a nice looking ride when it's all done.

Have we decided on a floor covering yet (or did i miss it)? Nautelex Shark looks pretty nice.

ok so now that the weather is nice, I got to Nautelex in the garage waitingto be installed. I got the galvit down today. Sprayed the spalsh well and transum with one coat of paint. Just needs to be wet sanded and painted again. Next nice day I get the flotation and wiring are going in and then the plywood. It's going to be a nice felling when the vinyl goes down. I'll put up some pics next time I do some work on her.

Re: starcraft 1992 cc mr170

I started to put the interior back together and got the motor on this weekend. Just ordered new control cables because the ones that came with the motor are to short and I would rather put new ones under the floor after do all this work. I hope that the weather stays nice so I can put down some of the nautelex flooring that I bought.
