Hey all... I think I may finally be getting my Starcraft. I have a quick question though. I am planning on replacing my bunk boards. It was factory 2x4 by 6' long. Thinking about making a 2x6 by 6-8 long. With the aluminum hull I would like to have a larger footprint with the 2x6 vs the 2x4 bunks on the bottom of the boat for transport. Or would replacing with 2x4 be just sufficient enough. Its a 1976 SS 16'. Any thoughts?

Re: Starcraft and bunk boards:

2x4 would be totally fine, 2x6 would be even better but unnecessary.

More important....

Let's see some shots of this new rig!:D

Im going tomorrow to pick her up... im just getting all my ducks in order, while trying to contain my excitement :D

Shes not a beauty queen thats for sure... will need a total resto.

Since one of them broke anyway... I might as well replace them with 2x6 might even double them up... thanks Jason.

Re: Starcraft and bunk boards:

Ya my trailer is much smaller EZ. its a 2006 Magic tilt... says its rated for 1125 lbs - 225 trailer weight.. which should leave me about 900lbs for boat and motor and extras inside.... boat has no motor just yet though. The info says that year SS weighs 675lbs.. so I should be fine? (cross fingers)

One last question...is there any problems (corrosion factor) with PT lumber for bunks and aluminum. I had thought PT was no good for any metal?

Im gonna post a pic of my trailer in a few... just for some more input.

Re: Starcraft and bunk boards:

I wouldn't use PT lumber for anything that touches the boat.

2x4 are cheap enough to replace when needed without risking corrosion from chemicals.

Good luck with the new SS:)

Figured I would post a pic of the before and after... my trailer seems small compared to yours EZ... either way... Ill post one pic of the "after" with the 2x6.

That trailer is smaller but I think you could set it up the same way as mine. I used PT. They are carpet covered and the hull is painted. I decided not to get all hyper paranoid about it.

OK, here is the after..... I decided to go with 2x6

Im going to carpet the boards tonight.
Ya i agree its smaller... It will be very close to max.. with motor too.
I will most likely fill up close to launch to keep weight down as long as possible while trailering :D

I'm looking at the tiny little axle and wondering if this trailer is really gonna cut it for a 16' Starcraft.

Re: Starcraft and bunk boards:

I hate to say it, but I'm not sure that trailer is gonna be up to the task.

Once you bolt a motor up you will be at capacity. Then factor in batteries, gear, kicker/trolling motor, etc, etc you will be closer to 1200lbs probably.

Most folks agree that you want to stay under the minimum capacity to be on the safe side.

On the other hand, if it's just for short trips and you take it easy you might be just fine.:)

What is the length from the bow stop to the end of the bunks?

Re: Starcraft and bunk boards:

I think that trailer would be great for my little 15' Jet Star, but, she weighs substantially less than the bigger 16' SS setups, especially with the them having the extra horses on the back.

Are those doubled 2x6's you have on there?

Does look like a solid little trailer though, great shape!

I moved the bow stop forward some.. and it near 15'

Yes ... I doubled up on the 2x6 to give it some more beef. However... the bunks are fine.. hope the axle is :(

Re: Starcraft and bunk boards:

Yah, just single 2x4s would work fine for ya. I think with the boat on that will give us a little better perspective of your setup, eh.

Have fun grabbing that boat!:)

Re: Starcraft and bunk boards:

What is the length of that trailer from ball connector to tail light???? I always, if possible, get at least a trailer one size to long and readjust the rollers. I pull it with a conversion van and most trailers have to short of a toung to avoit hitting the sides of the van when in a tight turn. My 16 SS rebuild had a origional trailer and was way to short. Bought a trailer for a 17 ft and it is super. Bought the trailer for $ 50 rewired and new winch and strap and paint and now have a like new trailer. Sold my old one later today for $ 150. Made out like a bandit.
