I'm not sure on the year, but according to other photos I have seen on this site, it is around a 1963-1964. I bought the boat with trailer for $600.
There is no ID tage on it. Heck, there was no info on it when I got it registered.
The boat came with a running 65hp 1973 Johnson Stinger 2 (painted of course). The trailer is in decent shape except for a few broken lugs and rotten tires. I will be going through the wiring due to the fact that the previous owner liked to piece many different color wires together. The bow light wire went from red to black to yellow to green to brown to yellow.
As you can see, I have most of the paint off. I plan on painting the upper half a dark navy blue.
The windows windshields are going to be a project in its self. I like the idea of using lexon instead of spending $800 on a windshield from Taylor Made that I don't know if it will fit.
I also need to replace the plywood in the back as you can see in the pictures. (if it works)

This site has been very nice so far. I was just reading another guys post of doing the same boat. He must have been working on it in 2009. He got the boat flipped back over and ended. Hoping to see the finished product. Not sure if im going to totally gut the floor out. hoping to use it this summer and then maybe do something with it this winter. Just can't seem to find to much on what to do about the hull windshield.

A garage sale Starcraft, love it! You have Alpena up there in the corner so I am assuming that would be Alpena, Michigan right? If so, you have a bunch of Michigan Starcraft wierdos around you who all seem to like rebuilding these old rigs.

So, why would the previous owner put mulch in your transom???

So strange, seems like most of us around here ended up with mulch rather than a real transom.:D:D

I'll be following along watching your progress, great project buddy!

Cheers!

Welcome to the site and the Starcraft armada Doug, nice find there:)

Alpena, eh? That's my stomping grounds for sure. We have some property on the big lake between Alpena and Presque Isle, we love it up there.

Hope to see you out there in the rig someday trolling for salmon or walleye:D

OK here goes; A guy with stubble on his face, holding a paint roller (dripping with paint). Boat off in the background, upside down of course. At the guys feet are a plethora of tools, angle grinder, drills, orbital sander etc.... and some pistons.

Throw in a dog for good luck, and maybe a small child wrapped around his leg, remnants of an ice cream sandwich about the child's face.

Welcome Michigander, Alpena rocks.

You got a bargain.
If you're gonna replace the upper windshield, i'll buy the old one. Mine is missing & I'm still looking for one.

Got to add the little woman in the background with a frown on her face. And an empty checkbook hanging out of his shirt pocket.

Welcome Dougsmo. Nope, never ended, just life is getting in the way. Wife has had health issues and we are looking at buying another house so the boat got put on the back burner. Your boat looks exactly like mine, 63 Starchief. Its got a ton of room that is great for the young ones that come along and the cabin keeps the weather out. You got a great deal, keep a resto going as you will pass me up and I can look forward to your ideas. Dale, aka fishngho.

Re: Starcraft Boat I Picked up at a Garage Sale

I want to get a paint job done on it for this summer and use it while the weather is nice. Plus, the wife is bugging be to fininsh it. I guess ill just finish stripping the paint on the upper half and do what I can to get it on the water. Pulling the floors and finishing the inside will be a good winter project. I hate working on it when its 85 degrees out.

HA was kind enough to post a few pics on the first page of my resto. It has one pic that shows your/my boat. There are a few more on the brochure thread I think. I counted about four of the Chieftans like ours on the forum. Maybe someone would be able to post more pics. Honestly yours seems to be the only one that is intact. Regards, Dale

Re: Starcraft Boat I Picked up at a Garage Sale

Well, I got back to the boat project finally. Last night I started to strip out the old carpeting and well, the previous owners did a fine cover up. The previous owner had covered the old floor with a 1 inch plywood. I was reading the "FSHNGHO" post and busted out laughing cus seems he had the same issue. And now, It is time to tear out the floor. So much for throwing on some fresh paint and go for a ride. I tore the transon out the same night. It was awsome. I pried it out just enough to get a C-Clamp on. I used the C-Clamp as a handle and bam, came right out. The wood was rotten as Heck. Will post pictures soon.

Well, it has been a while. Back to boat business. I have started on the boat again. I got some plywood and some 105 and 205 and started the transom. I also got one section cut out for my floor. I'm on my way.
