I'm looking forward to your your progress. If you can post some pics. It will help me out as I have the same design and cant figure how to access the the transom. If I find progress before you I will let you know as well... Good luck its prolly not as bad as it looks... i hope.

Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

Time for some rookie terminology education. The first Pic is of what I believe is both the upper and lower unit that I removed today. First is that correct and what is the piece called that is left still attached to the transom? Second, who do I remove the piece still attached to the transom?View attachment 176461

Second Pic is of the "thing" still attached to the transom. It looks like the port side took a hit at some point in time and a chunk has broken out. Is this a piece that I can replace or do I have to buy a bigger assembly?

Thanks in advance for the help. I will posting a lot more pic's. Had to laugh today as I was tearing apart the rear floor board to get at some transom screws, the plywood literally fell apart in my hands. I remember talking with the owner in our initial conversation and having him tell me how solid the boat was. At that point in the conversation I pulled out my screwdriver and sank it all the way through the transom. He was very willing to deal at that point

Can't see the pics, but I'm assuming you are referring to the gimbal housing. Can't see how big the chunk is since the pic isn't loading.

Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

Looks like it took a pretty good whack! Probably cosmetic unless there is anything that was bent when it took the hit. New they are not cheap, but the can be found used for a lot cheaper. And yes, that would be the gimbal housing.

Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

Thanks, after looking at the online manual it looks like I need to remove the engine so I can get access to the transom plate on the inside of the transom which I am assuming somehow bolts to gimbal housing??

Yup, engine needs to come out - then you can get to the transom shield and gimbal housing out of there:cool-new:

Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

Does anyone know how much the inline 6 165 weigh? I am getting ready to pull it and attach it to a motor stand and can't find a weight in the manual. Thanks

Making better progress than I thought I would. I'm sure taking apart is easier than putting back together.Fuel tank.jpgfuel tank clip.jpgInterior front.jpgRear exterior.jpg

I have attached a picture of the fuel tank clip that holds the tank in place they are the same on the front and rear and look like rivits that will need to be drilled out but wanted to ask the group if there is a trick about tank removal I should know about. Thanks

Haven't gotten that far on my rebuild yet, but it does look like my port tank has been replaced at some point. Looks like they drilled the rear rivet out and then slid the tank out leaving the front mount attached.

The out drive is not super heavy I took mine off my self. Build a stand for it out of scrap lumber to support it right under the cavatation plate. That way all you have to do is pull it back onto the stand.

I will be using a motorcycle jack and this jig that the PO gave me with the boat when I bought it.

Kinda did a prefit. I havent actualy used this yet but it looks good.

Yeah I think this is gonna work just fine..

I have seen a bunch a video on pulling these without support. They dont look that heavy if ya got a good back. Otherwise you might want to fab up something.

I'm not that big of a guy and had no problems sliding it out and lifting it off with just my hands.

That set up looks like it will work just fine, can you secure the wood box to the jack with a strap some how? You don't want the out drive falling off once it comes loose. Looking at the corrosion on the drive you may have trouble breaking the drive loose from the bell housing.

Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

Made a little progress this weekend. Removed both gas tanks, they are dirty but I don't see any rust so they may be useable.

I am about ready to remove the engine. According to the online manual it looks like three main connection points. One in front and two in the rear? Any trick stuff I should be aware of?? I have the inline 6.

I am also planning on really going through the engine and drive, is there a manual that can actually be purchased the one online really doesn't provide enough clear detail??

Thanks

Yah, you'll want the factory manual.

If Kev pops by he may help you on a manual, or, you could ask the fellas on the Merc IO forum where to locate an original factory manual. I'm betting they could hook you up.

Thanks, been looking at that manual and can't get it to print pages. Not sure if it is me or the application.

I don't know if they changed the format on it or what they did, but you used to be able to enlarge the page so that you could actually read it. Don't seem to be doing it anymore.
