I thought that it would be nice to have a thread where our nomenclature is explained in case folks run across some terminology they are unfamiliar with.

OK I'll start...

Limber holes- the little openings in the ribs along the keel line that allow for water to drain properly to the stern bilge area so it can be pumped out.

Rivets- the little things that hold our tin cans together, without which all of our boats would sink:p

Feel free to add to this list as you like:)

Re: Starcraft glossary

another thing that might be helpful to us noobs would be a general descriptive of what the various hull names....SS, Holiday, Offshore, Islander, etc....imply. i'd take a stab except i only know enough to expose my ignorance here. ie:

Starchief...short mini cabin cruiser, usually 18'4", weight about 1600# with I/O (usually 4 cyl Mercruiser of 120-140hp) or 900 with OB, similar hull and weight to 18' holiday

Islander....slightly larger cruiser than Starchief, made in 19, 21, 22, 24, and 26' versions over the years, 21-22' is about 2000# with I/O (usually 6 cyl Mercuiser of 165ish hp)

Holiday....closed bow runabout, made in 16 and 18' versions etc etc here i go being ignorant:redface:

Re: Starcraft glossary

Here is a couple I can think of real quick...

Rivet Bucking - One guy on the outside hammering the rivet with one guy on the inside holding something heavy against it (I've really never done it, sorry)

Deck - Actually means floor

Boat- A hole in the water that you throw money into. :p

But seriously...

Starting out I didn't know what knee braces were. They're the triangular braces that connect to the hull/deck and transom to reinforce & stabilize the transom.

Re: Starcraft glossary

Here are a few more:

Keel, the line where the two hull sides meet, the centerline of the boat.

Ribs, structural parts attached to the hull that run at right angle to the keel.

Stringers, parts, sometimes structural, that run parallel to the keel below the deck.

My favorite is still limber hole.

All subject to correction. :)

Re: Starcraft glossary

transom- the back of the boat that the motor mounts to, or the lower unit protrudes through.

splashwell- rear of boat only with outboard motors, catches the waves/water that splashes into the boat from the rear

gunwales- sides of the boat (from long ago when guns stuck through the sides of old gunships) gun walls

trim/tilt- usually hydraulic apperatus that allows motor or lower unit to trim in or out to achieve less drag on boat and smoother plane

Plane or planeing- when running the boat, the less boat in the water, the less drag, the higher the speed and or fuel efficiency.

draft- actual depth of boat below water line

Re: Starcraft glossary

Donor boat- a) a beat-up fiberglass hull lacking certain items required to be seaworthy, but still able to be stripped of parts to keep a classic Starcraft on the water.

b) A source of a good windshield for a classic Tin Can.

ex. Jasoutside's fiberglass Baja "Thumper" provided helm seats, gauges, a dual-axle trailer, possibly parts of a Mercruiser and other items for his beloved 22' Islander.

Closed bow: Only available on upper end vessels...designed for those 'in the know' ;)

Open bow: What those {who do not own a closed bow}, do in passing, in honor of those 'in the know' :p

Holiday: One of many Starcraft models... aka - what everyday feels like, on a Starcraft!

OOOoooooo, donor boat, good one!! You are right my friend, I do love that Islander. With a name like Thumper I think that Baja pretty much needed to be chopped.:D

Re: Starcraft glossary

I would have addressed this situation earlier but I was putting my carb back on the ever manly "Offshore" with it's majestic open bow. It takes a while to get in and out of the boat due to it's very deep V and large deadrise angle.

I have a couple for you guys.
Deadrise angle; http://www.tropicalboating.com/powerboating/deadrise-hull-angle.html

Holiday;
From the French word Silken Pajama (Halladie). These classy boats are a dream to ride in. The closed bow is perfect for transporting wheels of cheese and small kegs of wine across the Rhine River. They are manufactured in Paris, Indiana by white gloved, third generation French immigrants.

Edit; Fixed hyperlink. corrected grammer.

Starcraft SuperSport- the most versatile, spacious, and coveted of all the aluminum hulls manufactured in NE Indiana. Often accompanied by an attractive crew with fishing and water sports gear, the SS model is most often desired by those currently in posession of the less user-friendly, more archaic "closed-bow" models. Available in 16', 18' and 22' lengths. ;):D

Uh Oh, do I see competition on the horizon?

Horizon- horizontal line that separates the sky from the earth/sea/water as seen by the naked eye.

SWMBO- She Who Must Be Obeyed: popularized by RickAirMedic circa 2009.:)

Stanchion- the vertical supports that hold together bow/side/stern rails.

Gluvit-a) a beautiful epoxy/zinc chromate 2-part resin that is known for keeping tin cans from taking on unnecesary water thru the rivets or seams.

b) Liquid boat-saving goop, available from iboats.com, found in all properly done boat restorations.

If they grow up, which I choose never to. Mrs. Bwana wil be happy to verify this.

Starchiefs remind me of a a VW Bus, a kind of hippie mobile for the water.

Now if you'll excuse me I need to go fix my stanchion, of which my majestic open bow boat has many.

Peace Out: Don

careful there....you'll get me thinking of interesting paint schemes that will ensure it never gets stolen......

there's something very pragmatic about a boat you could live in after they foreclose on the house cuz you were plowing all the money into the boat, doncha think?? besides, it gives you a place to do da wild thang without returning to shore. ;)
