Re: Starcraft Islander project

Before spending a lot on the engine/outdrive consider an outboard.

You must be reading my mind. I've never owned or worked on an I/O...but that alone kinda pushes me to tinker with it and get a hands-on education about them. On the other hand, I would thoroughly enjoy an I/O to outboard conversion project.
I have a marine mechanic friend, so I'll probably pick his brain about whether or not the I/O is worth messing with.
This isn't going to be a project where I want to get'r done and run out and spend $12k on a new outboard though.
We'll see.

Re: Starcraft Islander project

The boat was delivered to me today. Started cleaning it out a bit. Got 3 trash bags of leaves and pine needles out of it!
Found 10 PFD's (3 new in the wrapper) 1 paddle, 1 large fish net, new gasket set for the gimble and a new exhaust bellows, 4 fishing rods, 2 fly reels, tool box, 2 new quarts of gear oil, 2 anchors (one with chain and rode), 4 trow cushions, and a mercruiser manual.
She's a 1976 model I found out. Engine is not original, it was a brand new replacement (not rebuilt) unit that has 300 hours on it.

Nice Islander! Welcome to the iboats dry dock snal. I see you have a bit of work to do on her. My son is into cars big time and I taught him he can find out what is wrong with a used car by looking for parts and fluids the PO has laying around inside.

I see your faced with some PO "modifications" to the transom like the some of us have had to repair on our boats.

You got way more than your money's worth, snal. There's something about those model Islanders that just look so gangsterish. Good find! :D

Yep! The transom wood is pretty good...except for the bottom 5-6"...so it'll all get replaced.
I suppose that since the engine is apparently a good one, I'll keep the I/O configuration rather than going outboard.
Still, she'll get a swim platform and a kicker mount. The floor will all have to be replaced.
She'll probably be a plane Jane restore, leaning more towards the fishing end.
I think the paint scheme will be a darker green (british racing) and a tan hull. Thinking I'll drop the green stripe on the sides
one lap line (not original but I think it will look better).
Probably add downriggers, marine radio, stereo, and a ham radio for floating DXpeditions...LOL!
Plans also include a full canvas camper top and side curtains.

Re: Starcraft Islander project

Does this serial number tell me anything about the model of outdrive that I have?

I believe that is a pre alpha merc drive, 'MR' maybe.. (?) does the top cap/cover have a hook/bump with a hole in it?

It's definitely an older model MC with the ring on top of the gear case. The number didn't show up as valid in a parts search.

Is that a home made platform on the transom? Those extra long bolts and wing nuts kind of give it away.

ya, sorry, just re-read an earlier post, you may have an older drive than the link I posted has a listing for, but i would wager a guess you can still get parts for it.. looks identical to the drive on my old 81 formula.. OR if need be, you can bolt on a 'newer' alpha one drive in its place, and they can be had fairly cheep.

Man, I think you did fantastic! Looking at your posts here reminds me a lot of another 1976 Islander hauled home on the cheap...

Except you have two major advantages......1) Yours has about the same amount of crap in there but a whole lot less snow! 2) You have the correct black driveline along with the correct looking keyhole in the transom.

Well done snal, well done!!!:thumb::becky:

Re: Starcraft Islander project

nice one and yes you can still get parts easy the stern drive. I went ahead and replaced the whole thing, trim rams, pucks etc on mine. SE106 is probably your part number from sterrndrive engineering

Yep...homemade. Has some nylon inserts in the ski-rope eyes with a bolt through them. Definitely a shade tree job.

That's probably what I'll end up doing.

Re: Starcraft Islander project

Started gutting her. Seats out, floor covering out, fuel tanks out, cabin door out, and windshield off.
Not sure that I'll be able to re-use the windshield frame...steel screws into the aluminum made for a difficult removal.

There are so many non-original holes in the entire topside, where things have been mounted and then later discarded, that I may simply
fab up all new topside metal.

Hey man, I know a guy who has an original 1976 factory windshield available. Shoot me a pm if you are interested and I'll get you connected with him eh.

Wough, I dunno about fabbing up a whole new topside, that seems super drastic!
