Hi I'm replacing the transom on my 1981 221v with a 3.7 I/o here in the next few weeks and had some questions. I've done lots of reading and replacement seems pretty straight forward but before I start I'd like to have everything I'm going to need to complete the job so far I have 2- 3/4" sheets of marine ply, 1- 1/2" marine grade ply and a kit that contains new seals where the outdrive meets the hull, bellows, and gimbal bearing. Also I have a new drive coupler since that was destroyed when the transom broke. I also have an alignment tool. Thanks in advance

Welcome aboard.

Sounds like you're ready to go. Don't forget to look at the supports for the motor mounts. If the transom broke, meaning it was rotted, the wood in the motor mounts is probably soft too.

Is this a Mercruiser? 3.7 is a 470, I believe. Then read below.

Also the thickness of the finished transom, including the aluminum skin is critical. Off the top of my head, it should be 2 to 2 1/4 inches and it must be flat from to to bottom and from side to side. The wood really needs to be clamped well around the keyhole when gluing it up.

Thanks and yes it's a 470, what does everyone use for glue and does anyone have any other tips that might help in removal and reinstall
