Andy,
A few posts back you were asking about how a swim platform would work with your type of splashwell. My old Starcraft SS has the same type splash well and works great with a swim plateform. I bought it off ebay and I think it cost around 69.00 + shipping. I found it in a ebay store but can't for the life of me remember which one. Its aluminum and teak and is very solid, holds up to my 260lbs a**. I did have to add a grab handle to get a little more leverage to get my big a** out of the water.

does a platform like that have any effect on performance (drag in the water)?

Oh, and while I was out for lunch today I checked out a few places for some aluminum rivets... i cant believe how hard it is to find 3/16th rivets with 3/4 grip range. the only ones i could find were only 5/8 range, and i went to 3 different places (2 hardware stores and 1 building material supply). so im going to go with ss screws, #10, 1". freakin $7.99 for 50 of them! got 2 packs, that should be enough right? also picked up a package of #10 1" pan head ss screws for the splashwell.

Andy,
As far as I can tell it has done nothing to affect the performace of my boat. However, I am running a CMC Tilt Trim unit and can suck my outboard in toward the transom a whole bunch further than most outboards. This lets me jump up on plane a bunch faster. Once up on plane the swim plateform doesnt contact the water. It also doesnt contact the water in turns. That step you see in the picture folds up and lays on top of the platform, so no drag there either.

You might check at a snowmobile dealer in your area. I believe Dennis kirk carries them as well.

UPDATE:

Got started coating the deck and transom in resin yesterday. This was my first time ever working with resin, and I have to say it went well, but there was alot I learned.

I'm pretty clostrophobic, so wearing the respirator was a bit uncomfortable.

I learned within the first 15 min NOT TO MAKE ALOT AT A TIME. I mixed up a quart... bad move. I now have a mixing cup with 3/4 of a quart in it, rock solid.

The plastic spreaders work way better than a brush. I tried just brushing it at first, and realized 1) how much I was using 2) it was very not smooth and 3) it was alot slower. By time I was on my last piece I was getting the hang of it.

Now a few questions.

There are some drips on the other side, so when I put them down they are going to stick up. What should I use to knock them down?

I started to sand the hull and there are several small holes on the transom that are filled with white silicon. what can I do to permanantly seal those holes?

I got the starcraft emblems off and want to strip the paint off them. is there something that I can just soak them in that will dissolve the paint but not hurt the plastic?

Andy on the deck once you get it in the boat and solid you can sand the excess resin off the top with an orbital sander at least thats how NB did it :D.

The Transom depends on the size of the holes but what I have heard recomended is putting stainless throughbolts in the holes after squirting some 5200 into them to seal in the bolts.

The emblems would depend on how bad the paint is I dont know of much in the paint stripper department that wont eat plastic so I would say just repaint them a semi gloss black and they should be ok as long as the base paint isnt all gooped up on them. I plan to redo my dash plaque and steering wheel with black paint and then ( carefully ) highlight the lettering with some Testors chrome enamel paint with a very small paint brush . My Hull emblems were originally stickers so I plan to get my vinyl lettering guy to hook me up with a new set once I get him the right font and size :D.

Search ebay for "Starcraft decal". That's where I got mine from and am very pleased with them. Come in any color.

they are pretty small holes, 1/8" or so... but there are about 18 of them..... can I use some type of filler or something?

Mine doesn't have a decal, its an actual emblem and I would like to stick to it. The only reason I want to strip it is because someone hand painted it and has all kinds of runs.

Andy if the emblem just has runs on it I would just take some doublesided tape and stick it down to a flat surface and then sand it with 400 grit on a sanding block to knock the runs off and then repaint it :D. I would say if the holes are 1/8" I would still go with stainless screws and some 5200.

You dont think it would look funny with all these extra bolts everywhere?

oh i forgot about some of the bigger ones, where the motor had a power tilt that had a seperate bracket, so there are 4 maybe 1/2" holes...

Andy I dont think that anyone who isnt a Starcraft NUT like us will even notice the extra screws and bolts through the transome and I would handle the 1/2" holes the same way . The only other option would be to take the boat to someone who welds aluminum and have them fill all the holes ( would be pretty easy on the 1/8" but the 1/2" would need plugs welded in the holes.I actually weld for a hobby and have considered getting a tank of argon and a spool of aluminum wire for my Mig welder .

Okay, so i will look into that for the transom. what about along the cap where there have been holes drilled for stuff? can I use some type of filler there??

For the cap some JB weld globbed on from the underside, cured, then sanded from the top should do it.

okay, another question (are they ever going to stop??)

when I screw the splashwell to the transom, should i pre drill and add 5200 (actually 4200, have 2 tubes of it already)

Andy Northbeach should be able to help with the holes in the cap . He found some capscrews that look like rivits from the topside to put in all the extra holes on his cap.You might actually be able to get them long enough to do all the 1/8" holes in the transome :D.
