Mike, remember there's a formula (which I forget) saying for every X of set-back you can raise the motor X. So your motor can go higher cuz of the jack plate.

Where's the anti-ventilation plate in relation to the bottom of the hull? Got a picture of the new motor bolted on?

I think my CMC bracket is actually too high on my Merc.

the av plate is just below the bottom of the boat. i was just talking to bob_vt and he asked the same thing. im going to raise it up to the next hole.

Ahh...good point. Here I was thinking it was installed too high to try to make it a shallower runner.

Andy if you haven't already it wouldn't hurt to run some Seafoam thru the OB in the next tank of gas, it might get a little more fuel running thru if there's any stuff gummed up in the carbs.

Have you started looking for water skis on craigslist yet:D

i dont know if anyone in my family is interested in water skiing... the kids like tubing... maybe they will show interest in it in the future...

but yes i do plan on running some seafoam through it. actually going to to a decarb maybe today if i have time...

1 gal premix, 1 pint seafoam. run for 20, sit for 10, run for 10, sit for 10, lather rinse, repeat till the heavy smoke stops.

i got the throttle cable connector for the motor side ordered today... i never realized that pre 1979 motors used a cable with bare ends and a connector with a set screw. i thought the cable i had was bad because it was bare on the motor end. i thought i would need a whole new cable, but i was able to order the connecter for half the price of a new cable, which i would have needed the connector anyways!

Re: Starcraft project: "STOLEN" PIC UPDATE 7-31-09 COMPLETED!!

so this week i raised the motor up a hole and trimmed it out to the third notch. did 35 steady on gps with 3 adults and 3 kids in rough chop and lots of toys/crap in the boat. planed out okay, but it feels like it can still come out some more... should i go another hole up? trim it out more?

heres a good hole shot video:

Okay..... Houston we have a problem

DO NOT make anymore adjustments ....yet.

If you are going to be doing testing on motor height and trim you MUST have the same weight in the boat. Dump the extra adults and extra kids while you do this....... no changes should be made yet.

gotcha. ill tell my wife that Bob said i have to go out with just me and my brother in law! gives me a good reason to go out sometime this week.
:D

i hadnt thought of the weight being an issue with testing. so considering the extra weight in todays run, what are your thoughts about it (planing, hole shot, top speed, etc)

I agree that you should try raising the motor, but I would not raise it much more without having a water pressure gauge installed. If you get your motor too high you will start sucking air and overheat your motor. When I was testing out my motor height I kept a close eye on my pressure gauge. It does sound like the motor should be raised, but be careful you don't fry your motor.

i hope i get my battery/charging issue taken care of by this weekend... but im leaning toward a bad battery... after i took it out and put it on the charger, on the 2 amp setting it was still in the START area. voltage measured at 12.6 volts. going to have it load tested today.

i have an outing planned with 2 guys from work sat evening, then fathers day sunday i plan on being out there all day with my family and 2 others, bringing the portable grill and the whole 9 yards...

update, i ended up figuring out that it was the rectifier that was stopping the battery from charging, probably blown because of a bad tach. after i replaced the rectifier the tach didnt work and sitting for 1 week killed the battery. disconnected the tach and we were back in business. then i had a problem where it was cutting out and dying. replaced the coil and back in business. the only issue at this point is the key switch wont shut the motor off, but i just choke it for the time being. the motor is running great and ive been out almost twice a week enjoying the lake, tubing and whatnot.

heres my facebook album from yesterday with my brother in law and his new girlfriend...

Re: Starcraft project: "STOLEN" PIC UPDATE 7-31-09 COMPLETED!!

thanks jeremy, i am. including what i paid, i would say i have about $400 into it. still need a new throttle cable though. and need to replace the key switch, but i can survive for now with it. im very happy with the performance of it. although i did have an issue the other day where i couldnt press the buttons for the shift... theres a plate/bracket thingy under them, and somehow it slipped out of position. luckily i was able to fix on the water by popping the control cover off. 4 screws and i was off like a bat out of hell!

the fuel consumption of it isnt too bad either. we were out for 5 hours, tubing for about 2 hours and cruising a bit and only went through about 8 gal. btw 3 adult 2 kids still cruising all day at 35, even pulling a tube! not that i pull tubes that fast, just did it to see...

Andy,

I read through your entire posting and was fascinated by your restoration. It turned out awesome. Gotta love those older Starcrafts. I'm looking at one in Clayton, NY. It's a 1972 Tri Hull in very good condition. Have to sell an old car first.... I did buy a 12' aluminum v-hull the other day for $175. It did come with 2 very nice swivel seats. Need to strip the old paint and repaint, replace a couple seat boards, add some other extras. Kids are excited.

Congrats on a nice restore.

I live in Lynchburg, VA, not too far from Smith Mountain Lake. Great place, good fishing.

Enjoy that Jupiter!!

Hey Andy,

I see you live close to Potsdam. I've been eyeing a farm there that is for sale.... I'm originally from Steuben County, near Corning. My wife and I are contemplating moving back to NY. (I know, I must be crazy...) :D

I know winters are long and cold where you live - just how LONG and COLD are they?? :)

hey bud, sorry it took so long to respond, i was on vacation. anyhow, winters here are wierd. it depends on how tolerant you are of cold and or snow. typically by early october its in the upper 30s at night. we usually have a small snow prior to holoween. but its usually not much. we get fair amount of snow from mid nov to january. here is where it gets tricky... we usually dont get much snow from jan to march, because it gets pretty cold. that is the hardest part. usually it drops below zero for 2-3 weeks. snow usually hangs around until the first of april. we actually get alot less snow than most people think, and luckily we are NOT in the snow belt that gets lake effect rom lake ontario. but that being said, think of it like this... people in the south live indoors in the summer because its too hot. same here, but opposite. summer is absolutly gorgeous here, and being a boater this is heaven. we have some awesome places to boat. the st lawerence, finger lakes, lake placid, saranac lake and the rest of the adirondacks are breathtaking. i have a co worker that moved here from south carolina and his girlfriend didnt think she was going to make it through her first winter. she did, and now loves it here.

and on top of it, potsdam is a great town. i always say if i could live anywhere here in the north country, it would be potsdam. its about 40 min from here.

if you end up in the area to check places out, give me a call and ill show you around a bit.
