Starcraft question?

After reviewing this forum for some time, a question came to mind. Why do so many Starcrafts need to be rebuilt? Are they not as good as other boats? Do Starcraft owners not look after them? Just wondering.

Just the opposite, they last a long time but need refurbishing after a while.

Yah, I sorta think some boats are better off going to boat heaven while many others (Starcraft for one) can certainly get a second lease on life if somebody is willing to put in the effort.

most boats could be saved, folks today would rather buy new than fix old, im the other way round. ive learned a lot and been able to help some that cant buy new. glass or tin it doesnt matter---save an old boat

I think you're seeing so many starcrafts here in the resto forum because some of us are just plain intimidated by fiberglass. You can buy an old (mine was a 66) aluminum boat and usually get by without doing structural stuff to bring them back to life. I did mine because I wanted something 60's era and the thought of doing a fiberglass restore was kinda scary.

Bit off topic, I always owned aluminimum boats but never a Starcraft or any other rivetted boat. How well do they hold up in salt water? I ask because we do get the odd one out here in Aus, and I like the classic lines and style of the 70's runabouts and I'm looking for something light and easy to launch on my own for those perfect windless winter days we get here.

Mine's all original from 1977. When it's done I'm hoping it will last another 33 years. I'll post again in 2043 when it's time to do her again.

Though we will be adding the anti gravity boosters and forward looking infared instead of lights, etc

Another thing to take into consideration is the speed at which you can restore and on Starcraft or other aluminum boat. There just aren't as many things that could be wrong with them as there is with a fiberglass hull.

I Restored my 1976 16' Starcraft SS in about 60 days start to sea trials. That includes new main deck, bow casting deck, consoles, wiring, lighting, transom, windshield, and re-powering....... but keep in mind I did not sand and paint the exterior.

Now I am currently going on 4 months with my current project which is a fiberglass hull.

The Starcrafts in the restoration section are the same as the popularity of the Johnson/Evinrude repair section........it isn't that the boats or motors break more often....it's that there are just so darn many of them still around after a LONG period of time!

They remind me alot of the old dehavilland brand we had here in oz, ever noticed how many of those you see still plying the waterways here?

We are best caught with aluminum!! If Jeeps were aluminum....maybe there would be more old ones around!

Show me a glass hull that is 42 years old (such as mine) that has been left out in the elements most of its life, and would be worthy of a restore?
Not many..they are all in the landfills or should be.
