The project is looking real good and coming together nicely. Amazing what you can do with a couple old Starcrafts, a little bit of money and time.

Total time
45 minutes for the seat backs, f ollowed by 6.5 hours for the si de panels, and about 1 hr to get the boat on the trailer.

Time = 115 hrs + 8.75 = 121.75

Expenses $0... all accounted for in previous posts... I am just using up vinyl and ply previously purchased.

0.75 + 6.5 + 1 = 8.25

Otherwise, all that work is really good looking. It's coming together great! And man, low hours & low cost. Outstanding!

The dashboards are done! The recipe:

1. glue mohogany board to 3/8 inch plywood (45 min)
2. Cut to shape. I was very lucky to have found the original aluminum trim for the pattern. (20 min)
3. put through planner until 7/8 inch thickness is reached. (25 min)
4. put some cardboard cutouts of the instruments to get a pattern we liked. (1/2 hour)
5. sand and cut holes. (1.5 hrs)
6. 3 coats of spar poly with a sanding of 220 grit between coats. 10 minutes each coat
7. mount on consoles using 3/4inch stainless #8 screws. (15 minutes)
8. Drymount the gauges!

Time....not including the dry times between coats, we are looking at about 4.25 hours.
Total time is 125.50 hours (this accounts for a math mistake that was found by one of you).

Next comes the steering wheel .

Total expenses.... the gauges were $131.50.
Total comes out to $1708.50

Carp, I think it includes BOTH boats

The total has been reduced as unwanted parts & pieces were sold off.... But still.... Amazing to be getting close to a splash for less then $2K:facepalm: We may have a new king of the bottom feeders............

Well I quess its a compliment to be called 'King of the Bottom Feeders'.... my wife just calls me cheap!

Ok...next step is done. the steering is in. all cleaned up, greased, and installed. This steering was from the other boat. Easy project. after cleaning it, it only took about 45 minutes to put in. The cleaning took the longest at about 3 hours. It took awhile to get some of the shine back and chisel out the old hard grease.






Cost $0 total still $1708
Time 3.75 for a total of... 125.50 + 3.75 = 129.25 hrs

Boat looks great!

The black paint looks sleek, but I would imagine that on a sunny day it's going to get hotter than hades.

Yeah, I know, it might get a little hot. But, when your 15 year old son, that is working with you wants black.... black it is! If it is too uncomfortable....we can always repaint it (at least the gunwales).

I got to work on the motor in the last few weeks...I would have gotten further, but I HAD to go on vacation.

The motor is a 1976 Johnson Stinger 75 hp. 3 cylinders, 3 carbs. Packed full of mouse nests!

I tested the starter.... dead as a door knob. I had a guy in Highland, NY rebuild it.... Very nice job. It looked new.

I saw that the gas lines were cracked so I replaced them all.



Degreasing seems to be the name of the game... but it cleaned up nicely.

I tested the pressure. All 3 cylinders came out at about 128 psi.

I tested the spark. All 3 spark plugs had a nice blue spark.

Disassembled lower unit to inspect the impeller... someone has been in this motor. The impeller looked new. Very flexible and no cracks.

Sanded down the entire motor.


Painted it gray with red accents.




I still have to do something about the logos.... I just do not feel like spending $60 for the word "Johnson" on a decal.

The best part of this... I did not have any extra parts left over!!!

Total time on the motor to date is 17,5 hours.
Total time on the entire project adds up to 146.75 hours.

Expenses were $70 for starter rebuild. $6 for the gas lines. Paint was left over from a different project, but I will put in $15. \
Total expenses to date are $1708 + $91 = $1799.

I hope you put in a new impeller. If you start with a new one you have peace of mind. My thoughts. Everything is turning out nice, fill.

This is one my favorite projects on this forum, because of the time and material tracking + the sheer amount of value in the two boats for under $1,000. Beautiful! You've done a good job and can't wait to see the final results on here.

I don't know if I missed it, but did you keep the other boat or parts?

Hello Concept10.. Thanks. I sold the other hull, but still have a windshield from the '76 and lots of little stuff... much would take work to refurbish. I am amazed on how much stuff is a a boat once you take it all apart.

I worked on the plate the fits behind the transom. I was lucky to have the original, so the cutting and fitting was easy. Drilling the holes was a piece of cake. I was also lucky that a neighbor of mine had some aluminum faced 3/8 plywood. He said that they used this stuff to build railroad boxcars. He had a piece out in the weather for years... seems pretty much indistructable.



The next step is to acutally mount the motor to the boat!

Time: a paltry 1.25 hrs from start to finish.
So the total; is now 148 hrs even.
cost... $0... i would not even know where to buy this aluminum clad plywood.

I have been out with the flu for 10 wasted days! But I have made some progress.

I have refurbished the gas fill and put it in.

The bow holders are rivited in. I put two sets in. this will hold the canvas boat cover up to shed water.

The front seats are also in. I played with the location quite a bit and settled on putting the seat at 5 1/2 inches from the bottom of the steering wheel. The side of the seat is 4 inches from the side of the boat. This gives it plenty of room to spin. It is easy to get into the drivers seat. The seat is mounted to the floor with six expansion bolts and 2 1/2 inches stainless bolts. I had to go this route because I do not have any access from under the floor.

The total expenses added up to $307. This included $75 for each seat, $70 for each pedestal, $1.50 for the bow holder set (I got two of these). and $14 for 12 expansion nuts and the 2 1/2 inch stainless bolts. The total expenses for this project is now $2106.

The time came out to 7 hours. Most of that was spent crawling in and out of the boat for stuff and trying to think out the process. So the time grand total is now 155 hours. Seems like I am creeping along......

If it was a logging into the iboats forum problem , it was a blackout, not just you... Did you have to enter the 5 digit prove you're human code to access the forum once it was back up & running? I did from all of my internet capable devices.
