I have a 1995 Cajun 17 1/2 bass boat with a 1995 Johnson SPL. While stranded on the water I resorted to disconnecting my troll battery and using it as my start battery. When I disconnected the battery with the engine running I reconnect the start battery I smelled electrical burning and saw smoke coming from my dash and tachometer. The tachometer smells fried. Did I make a serious mistake using the single troll battery as a temporary start battery or is this a fluke that this happened and all I need to do is replace the tachometer? The wiring to the tachometer seems to be in good condition. Any suggestions on where to buy a tachometer replacement on line at a resonible price. The tach has a square face plate.

Thanks,

john

Re: Start Battery / Tachometer

I'd say your luckey if you only smoked the tach..

The mistake was'nt using the deep cycle trolling motor battery, that works fine...... Disconnecting the battery while the engine is running is where ya goofed.. That's a sure way to cook a rectifier/voltage regulator...

If Iboats mega mall does'nt have what ya need (square tach), try and contact someone at http://www.classicmako.com/marineconnect/marineconnection1.htm , or e-bay...
