Re: start problem
At the risk of stating the obvious to an experienced boater, please bear with me for the sake of others that may not know...

Carbureted motor starting procedure:
1. Make sure the water pump gets water whether it's on muffs in the driveway, or backed into the water. Trim the drive down to operating angle.
2. Put the throttle/shift lever into Throttle Only and move it to Full and back to Idle once or twice to set the choke and pump in some extra fuel for starting.
3. Advance the throttle just a bit for Fast Idle and turn the key.
4. If it doesn't start within 20 seconds, repeat step 2&3 and retry. Don't repeat more than 4 times or it'll probably flood. If it floods, advance the throttle to full and retry, being prepared to pull it quickly back to idle once it starts.

Throttle Only is accomplished by pulling a knob or pushing a button at the point where the throttle/shift lever pivots while in Neutral, then moving the lever forward for Throttle Only, no shift. Those without knobs or buttons require that the whole lever be pulled out 1/2 inch or so.

There is a whole generation now that has never had to deal with carbureted automobiles. Starting that kind of engine is rapidly becoming a lost art. And this situation is even a little harder because there is no automatic Fast Idle. It's 100% manual.
