Start sequence for 50HP Mariner

I have read in this forum the starting sequence for several motors but still have a question. This is what I do to get it started, but it's still not easy.
1. Squeeze fuel bulb until firm
2. Press button in on throttle lever for and move throttle almost all the way forward. (by the way, it can be moved half way forward (45 degrees) and it will give a soft click, don't know what that means.
3. Start the motor but pushing in the key and turning it, some times it starts fairly quickly, sometimes it starts for a few seconds then sputters and dies.
4. If it dies, I sometimes sequeeze the bulb again and retry.
5. Once started I immediately move the lever down so it's about 1/2 throttle in sound (not by the angle of the lever) (still very high RPMs) and let is sit for a few minutes.
6. Then I move it down slowly to idle over the course of 1 minute and it appears to stay running.

I have only had it out on the water once and I was out there for 10 minutes getting it started. What am I doing wrong. I don't see where anyone else has moved the throttle to full when starting. And some people say to take the choke off once started, but how do I take off the choke, is that done by not pushing in the key? I don't have a manual for the boat. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Year and model would be a big help.If it is a 2 stroke it is an enricher not a choke.My 3 cyl won't start if I use any throttle.

Dont keep trying the same things.Experiment.I ve read where one guy,After priming bulb and advancing throttle lever,pushes and holds in the key button(enricher)for 8-10 seconds and then turns key while holding it in.Once you get running,if it sounds like its going to die,simply push key back in and it should kick back up.This is,of course,assuming 1)your enricher works properly,2)your carbs are clean and in good working order,3)fuel pump is in good working order,and 4)youve got good compression and spark.

Sorry for the lack of info, it's a 2 stroke 1985 model with 3 cyl. I guess I have a dumb question, what is the difference between an enricher and a choke? Also, does moving the throttle lever ahead change the amount of enriching or are they separate? Thanks for any info.

A choke works by covering the throat of the carb forcing it to suck more fuel in. An enrichner is some method of squirting raw fuel in. My '88 100 hp has an enrichner that squirts it into the intakes.

Also, does moving the throttle lever ahead change the amount of enriching or are they separate?

No. They are separate.

Here's how I start mine. Squeeze bulb till firm. Give a very small amount of neutral throttle. The smallest I can do. If I give too much it will over rev. Turn key to run. In one motion, push in key and turn to start. It always fires and starts immediately that way.

I should have mentions another thing. When I move the lever from vertical to about 45 degrees (and the motor is already running), it doesn't appear to change the RPMs. Then, at about 45 degrees there is a soft indent and beyond that is where the RPMs go up. Is this normal and why the soft indent at about 45 degrees? Thanks.
