I have 2 outboards.

70HP Johnson
50HP Evinrude

General question, when I connect jumper cables to my solenoid from my battery on the Johnson the engine does not crank, until I turn the key.

However when I do the same, on the Evinrude, the engine cranks without a key in the ignition.

Why is this?

solenoid have 2 main posts IN (form batt) and OUT ( to starter) and a smaller control post.

if you apply batt B+ to the IN post... the solenoid must be activated with the key at START to pass B+ over to the starter ....the normal way it works

B+ on the IN post with a starter going wild means the inner contacts are welded shut or.... battery from the key is active due to a bad switch or the control wire crossed to a B+ supply simulating a key on in the START position.

check you Key pin posts for crossed wires

Interesting, I am going to try the red plug from the johnson and see if this if it kills the current untill I turn the key.

This would make sense because when I took the ignition switch out of the boat wires were all the wrong colors and multiple “fused” together. Essentially was hot wiring the boat.

btw the above reflects one way of going things to get a starter to start spinning. post your model #s depening on wiring starter control may pass via a safety neutral interrupt .

some systems use a ground to get the solenoid/starter going as in modern ETECs

a wiring diagram /service manual is always helpful

see typical diag. from MASTERTECH site follow yellow-red from KEY START (S) to solenoid

It is very easy to damage electronic ignition when wires are hooked up wrong.----Makes expensive smoke.

Yes, and this smoke doesn't make you happy like smoke from that "green stuff".

Just pull the red plug and jump it again. This should tell which general area is the problem. Make sure you have devised away to turn it off.

Not certain there is a plug

diag. is just for guidance only and may not apply to his model#s which we still do not know :)

Hey everyone the model number is 50573B. I have not been able to try out the other chord just yet because it’s now 12 degrees outside; but will be able to in the next couple of days.

I am getting into the boating world. Electrical stuff seems so complicated, but breaking it down makes it seem so much easier to follow along with. Excited to tackle this.
