hello again to all. just to refresh, i picked up a 74 mfg caprice. it has a 165hp straight6 and an omc i/o. well i got it running. it seems to run pretty well. there is a drain bolt on manifold that was stripped out that i knew about that needs fixing, no biggie, but i have a leak in what appears to be an coolant port that is capped off on the outdrive. when running was comes out pretty good. same port on otherside is dry so i'm guessing it should be as well. appears to have a gasket with gray goop behind cap. i was just going to remove it and try fixing with permatex, but i thought i might take a vid and get somefeedback here. i've never seen gray permatex so i did not know if i needed a special type.???? i will try to post a link to my photobucket link below

Hummmm
That's interesting....First, don't get just any gasket cement. Get one made for marine use. Certian compounds in these sealants can react with the metals in your out drive.
It might be best to locate a manual that explains things better. Also, try posting your question here

These guys should be able to tell you whats going on. Hope that helps

Gray RTV is sold as "Import Gasket Maker" and is very tough. Includes applications for aluminum blocks, trannies and heads so your outdrive will be OK- it is formulated to be noncorrosive to aluminum. The gray cures up differently than the others (except maybe the high-temp orange) but if there is a specific marine version use that. The gray was fine to use.

Yes I was able to view it OK. I actually LOVED the sound of that engine but I am weird like that. I like old VWs too. Reminds me of The Sermons of Bob Hoover :p

hey another ? i have. this is going to be in a slip so i need a cover. i looked at the link at top of page and they looked like a slip "over" entire boat. my boat has button snaps all around top. does anyone have or make a cover for this that snaps and is more " fitted " if you will?

The covers you see on iboats and other sites, are basically storage and/or trailering covers. They will work OK. If you plan to slip your boat for the season, you should install a bilge pump. The snaps you see are for the original MFG canvases. The only way to use them, is to find an original or have one made to fit.

oh it does have a bilge pump and it does work , but....... i have heard tooooo many stories of a pump not working for 1 reason or another and boat sinks. usually a piece of crap hanging up float is the culprit. cover is just insurance for me, plus good to keep the floors dry

Re: Started Up Boat. Has A Leak!

well just an update here . ......had the boat out on the lake and the motor seized up. i got it home and a while later it freed up. it still runs, i'm guessing the rings are shot now..... thats it. i'm all done with it. i'm going to sell it or part it out. if anyone needs a good stringer outdrive, tilt motor, 165 hp motor to repower, steering setup, good trailer with new wheels, let me know. located in northwest connecticut . my kid is heartbroken. i had him all revved up to do some good fishing out of it. i can email pics and numbers off anything your interested in or whole boat if need be
