Started yammy out of water...should I check it out?

I'm a dope, I know.

Had the motor trimmed up, fished, forgot it was trimmed, and turned the key.

It ran maybe 2 seconds dry 'fore I killed it.

Do I need to check anything in the engine? Impeller? Pump? Anything?

Or am I just being paranoid?

You should be fine. Just make sure you have a good stream of water coming out of your tell tale.

Try not to do that too much, eventually it will trash the impeller.

Hi All,
I had a follow up question to this one. Was helping a friend who wanted to put his used boat in the water for the first time this weekend. He had bought the boat used (1989 18 Foot Sea Ray 3.0 with Alpha Drive) and the previous owner had it winterized. Before we went to the ramp we wanted to make sure it would start ( We were going to let it run for just 2-3 seconds - No Water connected) we lowered the drive and and after several attempts it would not start. We went to the Marina bought the part to hook the drive up via garden hose, turned the water on and bingo it started. Was wondering, is there some type of safety to prevent the engine from starting without water ??
Or if we had flooded the engine and it just needed time to dry out ??

The starting after connecting the muffs was a fluke. There is no safety for having water connected. But you shouldn't ever run the engine without water, unless its an emergency. The muffs are cheaper and faster/easier than an impeller replacement.

Agree. It doesn't hurt though to make sure the battery is up by bumping the starter for maybe one revolution without it starting, though. Saves possible aggrivation on the ramp..
