Starter Bendix Wont Drop

I winterized my motor today ('94 60 HP Johnson) and my last step was to put a final squirt of fogging oil in the cylinders and turn over the motor a couple times to spread it around. I did so with the kill switch engaged (no spark) but when i did that my bendix gear stayed in the up position and wont drop back down. I tried rotating the fly wheel in both directions and the bendix spun with it but it would not drop. Any suggestions?

Try putting some light oil on the worm gear teeth and light tapping on the top nut. If worse comes to worse, remove the starter and disassemble the bendix and oil it up.

Not to worry, it is normal. The flywheel kicks the bendix down when the motor starts running (rotating faster than the starter). It didn't start running, so the gear stayed up. You can sleep well, knowing it's ok. If it really bugs you though, put a wrench on the nut and hold the flywheel from turning while you turn the starter with the wrench. Completely un-necessary, but go ahead if you want.

Use a light machine oil nothing heavy or you’ll gum it up

Sometimes the splines get burred up because of not enough lube when it was assembled and splnes get rough, see it alot on 15 s

Won’t the spring lose it’s strength if it’s compressed like that for a long period of time? Mine is doing the same thing…

The spring will not loose it's strength.
