I have a 1996 Johnson 90hp V4. I've been having lots of problems with this motor.

When I turn the key to start it, some of the time I get that click-but-no-turn that you get when the battery is totally dead; as if the solenoid is engaged but the starter motor can't crank... the batteries are charged, however, and if I turn the key a couple more times it will eventually start to crank.

Any thoughts?

The clicking is the soleniod, so you have a few possibilities..

1. you have a bad connection between soleniod and starter.
2. your soleniod is not correctly switching the current to the starter.
3. your starter is on its way out.

I'd check them in the order you see listed.
check all connections first.. then hook up a test light to the starter terminals and see if it is gettin a positive when the its just clicking and not spinning the motor.
if it is getting a positive, then its probably your starter thats the problem, maybe a worn bush. if it is not getting a positive, then its probably the soleniod.. and you can't do that much about that apart from replace it.. they are usually sealed units.

hope that helps..

rgds

Frank

A commonly overlooked problem on that motor is a loose or internally corroded threads on the ground stud at the block. Remove the cable and the stud. Make sure the threads are clean and there is a toothed lockwasher present.

Also, remove wing nuts from the battery and use lockwashers and nuts, tightened with a wrench. If the terminals and posts are not "shiney", use a wire brush and sandpaper to polish them up.
