Starter cranks but no power at 'R' terminal

I have a Mercruiser 165. I just completed a motor swap and now am having problems with wiring/electrical.

I have traced all engine wires and everything appears to be "ok" but I must be missing something.

My starter has 3 terminals. Main battery terminal, "S" terminal to start, and "R" terminal for power to coil.

When I turn the key on, I get power to the dash and everything but I get no power at the "R" terminal on the starter to energize the coil. If I turn the key to start the starter will crank the engine (of course it won't start because the coil is not powered.). I can jump a wire from power to the coil and it will start and run fine.

Before my motor swap, it was starting normally but would not shut off when I turned off the key. Is this 'R' terminal a relay that could be bad? what am I missing?

Thanks!

Re: Starter cranks but no power at 'R' terminal

It is the "I" terminal that should be supplying power to the coil with the key in the 'run' position......
Any power coming from the starter area should be from the slave solenoid with the key in the 'start' position.....
You need to keep testing to see where it is wired wrong.....
The engine won't shut off with the key off because the coil is being fed from somewhere other than the "I" terminal on the ignition switch.....;)
