I am trying to find a starter for a Kohler Generator model 5E/19905. The Orginal Part Number is KO359924. I can't seem to find that part at any of the places I have called. I am told I can also use Part GM12231. This is appearantly not a Kohler Part so I am not sure who to contact for it.

Re: Starter for Kohler 5E/19905

Thanks Again Capt Ken. I did find one, Already ordered it and should have it Friday, being sent from Miami.

Well Kohler took the position you mentioned in my prior post. They stated that they will not even look into the cause of the water entry to determine if they will cover it and stated that the water entry voided my remaining warranty and no furture repairs of any kind would be covered regardless of the cause. Based on the history of the Kohler generator I have been exposed to I will soon need to be replacing it. I always had Onan's in the past, never had a problem, but I believe they no longer offer a small gas powered Gen Set. I have heard good thing about Westerbeke. When this thing dies I'm considering that route. I was out this past week end with three other boats, we all have Kohlers. Mine obviously was not running, but by Saturday night neither were the other 3. 100% failure rate Scarry

CarpeDiem,

I think Onan still makes small gassers, they do for motorhomes anyway.

Onan is now owned by Cummins Engine Co. A local Cummins Distributor should be able to tell you what's available.

Kohler and Westerbeke is the only two builders of gas marine gensets now. Onan got out of the gas market back in the mid 90's due to the new emissions rules. We've had real good luck with the Westerbeke product and being its a 1800 rpms unit vs the Kohler 3600 rpms, it more dependable and quieter. In fact, its so quiet, they don't even build a sound shield for it.
