my brother in law had a problem with his starter it’s marcruiser 3.0 on a ‘93 sea ray bow rider 170 went out on the lake and it ran ok went to start it a few weeks later and it was dead, the pic is what the starter wires looked like it, don’t know how that happened, anyways he cleaned it up and hooked it back up but now it won’t start it will crank, fire and try to start but nothing I noticed that his didn’t have a fuse on top of the starter did they have them on them in 93?

No Merc wasn't using the 55 AMP fuse on these 3.0's in 1993.

Yes on the 1996 3.0LX then 1998 on the 3.0L then going to a 90 amp a few years later.

It kind of sounds like you might have the 2? smaller wires (ignition & start) crossed up at the starter posts...Maybe post a photo of the cleanup job to see if someone recognizes wiring position, etc.

with all the corrosion at the starter, one of the large cables is no longer connected.

suggest pulling the starter and cleaning up the wiring.

Yeah he did clean it and put new wires on it I just don’t have a updated pic, any ideal on what would cause corrosion that fast cause it wasn’t like that a few weeks ago

I’m pretty sure he’s got it hooked up right it’s not pretty but it works enough to start sounds like it not getting fuel

that level of corrosion on the battery cables is an issue.

the cable lugs and the starter stud should be cleaned with a wire brush until you see shiny metal. it needs to be clean enough your mother-in-law would eat off it.

It’s cranking and firing just dies as soon as it fires

Ayuh,..... Sounds like an ignition circuit problem,....

i got there today and we checked some stuff out it would only fire completely if we put about a cup of gas directly into the carb so we pulled the plugs cleaned them up and it was starting and running fine after that
