Okay, I'll pull both. If #4 is borderline, then #1 is also?

If it's rings, engine has to come out.

Trust me, I know. Read my post (#11 in this thread) from back on Sept 13.

I don't want to fix one thing then find out its something else, then something else from there. I don't want to keep putting good money after bad, I know you can't see it, but does this sound like an isolated problem or am I infact, going to need a new engine?

Re: Starter grenaded!!

IMO, you need an engine.
Too much salt water, for too long (and the compression reading prove it).
But it costs nothing to pull the heads, then post some pictures. Don't forget, we can't see, hear, smell or feel problems on your engine, only you can.

Re: Starter grenaded!!

hopefully it will be rings or something simple!

I have to confess, I had to smile when I read that. ;)

If it is rings - then that's not something simple. That means an engine rebuild.

If you are mechanically inclined, it's not something incredibly difficult... but does mean alot of work. Simple it is not. :)

Re: Starter grenaded!!

I was able to get the boat running, ran it for about 15 sec. at a time for a few times then removed the plugs and did another compression test:
#1 - 140
#3 - 80 Also tested this cylinder with plugs in and running -120psi
#5 - 169
#2 - 162
#4 - 145
#6 - 159
better numbers than before, but not by much. I haven't had time to remove the head yet. Then I did run it on the muffs with little water and the drive belt removed. (Exhaust manifold also removed) I did find after doing that I had some water in the oil again and some spraying out the #1 cylinder again. Does that pinpoint any specific area?

I still haven't changed my mind.
But if you want to test some more, by all means look into a leakdown test.

Okay, I'll try a leakdown test. can I use the compression gauge if I modify it? Is it fine to preform the leakdown test with the exhaust manifolds off, or does it not matter?

Re: Starter grenaded!!

Had family issues to deal with, but now I'm back at it! these pics are what I found after I removed the heads. I'm still thinking it was my exhaust riser due to the condition of it when i removed it. it was also pretty clogged up.

I also had the heads checked out--they are fine, no cracks and I was told the valves are fine and the heads aren't warped.

If you ran the engine without the manifold on the engine and still got water in the oil and in #1 piston then youve got something else going on. It cant be a bad riser if its not on the engine.

I would guess it was either a bad head gasket or the block is cracked somewhere. That isnt water thats been sitting in #1 piston is it?

When I removed the heads I didn't have any water sitting in the pistons. I'm in the process of putting it all back together with all new gaskets.

Re: Starter grenaded!! pics added! UPDATED!

After going thru the posts, You mention that is was running without a manifold and water was spraying out the exaust port. Cracked head and or block. This has been ongoing and not just happened. Have you noticed hard/sluggish starting like a weak battery ? A engine miss that goes away?

Starting really didn't seem hard. You think the manifold is actually cracked? what about the gasket? the gasket from the riser to the manifold didn't look great. And you could see rust on the inside walls of the riser down into the exhaust manifold.

Re: Starter grenaded!! pics added! UPDATED!

hey there, good morning-
in that last set of pics, I can see rust has formed between the intake and the exaust valves, are you sure you do not have a crack there, did you pull the valves and then have it magnafluxed?

Re: Starter grenaded!! pics added! UPDATED!

I did have the heads magnafluxed. They have no cracks in either of them. I did have a valve that wouldn't seat all the way, but after they cleaned them it seated on it's own.
