O.K. team we are back for more! Johnson 120, 1991 with one HOT starter! We hit the key and the girl turn's over slow, almost like it's a dead battery, we were out on the water yesterday and all well, went out tonight and turn's over to slow to start. came back home, tested battery, battery is at full charge? hit the key three times in the driveway, and starter is hot to the touch? to top this off my neighbor is starting to have a field day with me,He owne's one of these yamaha's Now we might be older, but out on the water we leave him in the wake! So once again we need to get these two fishermen back out on the hot spots!!!! For those that don't know, my kid(13) and one of our other neighbors (70) are fishin partners. Now we all know the value of braggin' rights, so can someone point my compas in the right direction from the non boater thank you

Re: starter hot?

My guess is a bad starter. Check all your grounds and the red lead connected to the starter. While at it, check all the wires for good connections. You can buy a new starter, you can buy a used one, you can get an aftermarket one, you can take yours to an elec shop and they can probably repair it. Take yours off the motor...put 12 volts to it...it should "jump" in your hand. Good Luck. Alan

Re: starter hot?

Get your battery checked also, you can have a dead cell and still be showing decent voltage, once it's under load it doesn't put the voltage and more importantly amperage to the starter.

Also as was mentioned, check ALL connections and make sure they are clean and tight, use steel wool or sandpaper on ALL of them, make sure all grounds are good. If they check out good, then your gonna have to suspect your battery cables, and check them out. They could have corrosion inside of them that you can't see adding resistance into the circuit.

Re: starter hot?

With the starter on the engine, use a single jumper cable to jump the starter thus bypassing the solenoid. Connect one end of the jumper cable to the POS terminal on the battery. Next, be prepared for a spark as you touch the other end of the cable to the large post on the starter. The starter should now spin up. If not, add the ground jumper cable by connecting one end to the NEG terminal on the battery and the other end to the engine block (unpainted area or clean bolt head). Now touch the starter again. If it still doesn't spin up its bad. If it does, you have work to do cleaning battery cable ends (both ends). If that still doesn't help, you have a bad solenoid.

Re: starter hot?

O.K. team, we orderd new starter, need to wait four day's. came back home and took old one apart to show the kid what a starter is on the inside, and found our problem. one of the neg. brushes was loose on the inside due to the plastic holder being broken, we looked on the omc parts page and found one for $68.00 Can anyone tell us how we could get our hands on a used one? it hold's all four brushes and is on the bottom of the starter, I can only guess how many other folk's have replaced a good starter that could just replaced this plastic/bakeolite brush holder? Who knows? Thanks as always
