Starter Installation on a 3.0L

Ok, I got my starter shipped, and installed it. I do have some questions though, so if you can help me out here, I really appreciate it, because the boat came with the starter removed, and the old owner wasn't mechanically inclined, and also ran out of money, so he sold it to me as is. I'm not sure where all the wires go.

1. It came with this spongy gasket that appears to belong to the front of it. However, when I put it on there, it just rubs against the flywheel, so I took it off, since the original did not have one. What is this for?

2. I found this little black bracket in the bilge. It looks like it came from the engine somewhere, but I have not idea. I thought it connected to the bolt next to fuel pump, but there appears to be nothing it attaches to. The old starter also did not attach to it. What is this bracket for?

3. Here it is installed. I am pretty sure I got the pressure switch wire, and the starter switch wire in the right spots. All the wires attached to the top connection are for the battery, alternator, trim pump, and ignition, etc.

btw, what are the little bolt attachments on the backside of the starter motor for?

Am I supposed to attach a ground wire to one of those to the engine block?

Ayuh,.... Yer callin' the Forward end of the starter, the "Backside,..??
Just 'cause yer lookin' at the transom, the boat is still headed towards the bow,...

The larger of those studs can be used for a forward support bracket for the starter,....
'tween the 4 of 'em, they hold the motor together, to the aft housin',.....

That little black bracket ya found in the bilge was for the old style big motor starter, for that purpose,...
It won't reach on that permant magnet motor,...
It goes to that loose bolt on the block, just aft of the fuel pump, in yer picture,...
It'd be a Great Idea, to fab a new one up for that starter, they help alot,...

I figured that's what the bracket was ofr, but it didn't connect to the old starter either. At least I can't figure out how it did. Weird. I suppose I could figure out some way to make it work, but not sure not sure how to make the new starter connect to it. Have you ever seen someone else do this?

start with a piece of flatstock at the engine block hole and bend accordingly to meet the bolt on the starter

Is the bracket supposed to bolt to the two little bolts on the front end of the motor?

If the old starter didn't have the bracket stud, it was probably an automotive starter, not a good thing.

Just one of the studs will work fine, that's the way the old starters were, though the stud was bigger on the old starters. I used a little piece of 1.5"x1.5" aluminum angle (2"x2"?) to make a bracket, when I swapped to a permanent mag starter. Here's an image of the stock bracket pulled off google images (mine looks a lot different, work s the same):
